Four Distance Learning Theoretical Concepts:

The four distance learning theoretical concepts, as outlined by McIsaac and Gunawardena (2001) are transactional distance, interaction, learner control, and social presence. Touching on and immersing the learning in all four of these concepts is crucial to maintaining a successful distance learning environment for all students. Transactional distance focuses more on student-teacher dialogue and interactions. Interaction is broken down into four types, including learner-instructor, learner-content, learner-learner, and learner interface. Learner control requires a balance between a student's own personal choices, abilities, and support. Social presence includes activities that are designed to help students feel included and are contributing members of the class.

Reference:
McIsaac, M. S., & Gunawardena, C. N. (2001). I will provide interaction between myself and peer-peer interaction through the use of live google meets/chats. In my assignments, I will always offer multiple options on performance opportunities, so that students feel comfortable playing their instruments on camera for me. Online students will also have the opportunity to work in small groups on chamber music, and through the use of online apps such as Padlet, Wakelet, google classroom, etc.
In addition to leading the google meets with the online learners, I will continue to demonstrate musical exercises for them on my end, and make any necessary accommodations for students who need more support.

This lesson involved students working online to write in rhythms for 16th note counting, and then having them perform them on their instruments. It demonstrates the social presence concept in that students can enjoy working together on an assignment. It also demonstrates student-teacher dialogue in working to help the students with their rhtyhms.

At the start of this school year, as well as prior to taking this class, I thought it would be nearly impossible to run a successful high school band program with some of the students as full time distant learners. I worried about how they would be able to participate and feel connected to the band, and to myself and those students in person in the classroom. Having now completed this class as well as the most unique school year ever, I feel I have grown as a teacher, musician, and educator. This class has offered me some valuable resources to provide to my distant learning students. Through apps such as SeeSaw, Kahoot, Padlet, etc., I am able to bring the classroom online and have all students participate in class activities. I am more aware of the importance of student choice in their assignments and education, and will make more of an effort to provide a wider variety of assignments and assessments. I feel I have learned valuable tools and ideas to fully engage my music students while also helping to create a learning environment in which they feel like any other member of the class.
