Adolf Hitler became the leader of the Nazi Party in July, 1921 and became the Chancellor of Germany in January 30 1933 following a series of electoral victories by the Nazi Party. As a result of the grim atmosphere of the early 1930s, Hitler came to power as the Germans were desperate for a strong leader. Germans believed the German government to be weak, and Heinrich Brüning, the chancellor, only added to the bitterness of Germans. In 28 February 1933 Adolf Hitler would seize emergency powers after the  Reichstag Fire. This was significant because this would give Hitler power to do whatever he wants and would lead to the start of WW2.

The significance of this attack was that it cut off the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), as well as a large number of French and Belgian forces, from the rest of the Allied forces in France.

This was significant because Dunkirk was a critical turning point in World War II. Germany's blitzkrieg strategy depended on maintaining a concentrated forward momentum in its invasion of France and Belgium, and if the Allies held out for longer, their plans could have been scuttled.

On September 7, 1940, German planes began flying over London at about 4:00 p.m. For two hours, 348 German bombers and 617 fighters targeted the city, dropping high-explosive bombs as well as incendiary devices. The Blitz ended on May, 11, 1941. This was significant because it targeted civilians and devastated London and it was the most determined attempt by the Germans so far to win the war.

The Siege of Leningrad was an Axis attempt to starve out the city until they surrendered. It was significant because it was an important Russian city that produced a lot of steel and tanks.

Strategic bombing raids began in June 1944 and continued until the end of the war in August 1945. Allied naval and land-based tactical air units also attacked Japan during 1945. As well as regular bombings on Japan, the United States also detonated two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945, respectively. The two bombings killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people, most of whom were civilians, and remain the only use of nuclear weapons in armed conflict. The cause of the atomic bombs was, it led to a quick end to World War II and saved the lives of American soldiers, it also matched the brutality that Japan used during the war. The long-term effects of the atomic bombs were it led to long term health effects for the people exposed to the radiation.

The bombings and the atomic bombings were both significant because they are what led to the defeat of the Japanese and the end of World War II.
