When the Roman armies were in transit, they had a very different formation as opposed to the default formation. Flankers walked all on the outsides, protecting the troops inside of them. The cavalry rode in front behind the flankers. On the outsides of the cavalry are some light infantry, and this whole region of troops are called the vanguard. Behind the vanguard is a line of infantry, called the main body. The flankers are also on the sides of the main body. Behind the main body is the baggage, composed of many lines of flankers. Finally, behind the baggage is the rear guard, composed of light infantry in the front and back, infantry sandwiched in the middle, and cavalry and flankers in the back. As soon as they spotted the enemy, they would automatically reform to the default attacking formation, if they had enough time.

In the battle line, each soldier should have three feet of space in between them and the next soldier. Each rank should have six feet in between them and the next rank in line. It was recommended the if the cavalry was weak, it should be strengthened with foot soldiers that were lightly armed.

Roman Centurions

A centurion was the leader of a centuria. A centuria is the smallest unit of a Roman legion. Like I said before, there were 10 cohorts in a legion. In each legion there were 6 centuria. Each centurion commanded 100 men, so there were 100 men in a centuria. This means that there were 60 centuria in a legion. Each centurion was arranged in order of their rank. There was very little difference of importance between the ranks, except for the highest-ranking centurion of the highest-ranking cohort, called the primus pilus, or the officer. Most of the other centurions were plebeians and got promoted from normal soldiers.

The early Roman legions were divided into many different groups. They were divided into 10 cohorts, 9 housing 550 infantry and 65 cavalry. The rightmost cohort contained 1100 infantry and 30 mounted troops. On either sides of the cohorts were cavalry. In front of the cohorts were the ferentarii, or the light troops. In front of the ferentarii were the triarii, or the reserves. This was the typical legion formation for Roman battles.
