Introduction to Anticipation

Anticipation as defined by Oxford Dictionary as "expectation or prediction". In music anticipation is the expectations that a song or musical piece creates for the listener. Expectations that my group discussed could also be described as feelings. For example, in a electronic song anticipation might make the listener feel anxious before the beat drop. Anticipation can be used to hype a listener for an amazing beat drop, but at the same time anticipation can bring a listener's hopes up. Unfortunately, anticipation can be a double edged sword. Anticipations can make the listener feel a variety of ways. In songs, such as "Hello" by Adele, it might make the listener feel curious or cause a state of deep thinking. Anticipation in the song "Jeremiah/World Needs Love" by BJ the Chicago Kid is used to help BJ take the listener by surprise. Across many genres, music uses anticipation as a way to create expectations, surprise the listener, and creates a pathway to meaning. Anticipation use musical elements such as, crescendos, increasing tempos, repetition, increasing density, changing dynamic and lyrics.

In this padlet i will give examples of Anticipation from different genres. I will also include my favorite lines from my group's (group 36) essay. I will also

This song uses anticipation to create a powerful sound. The first part of this song seems to harness energy from itself and releases it all by the end. Anticipation is created through the repeated kick of the drum, the guitar playing upscale, and the high hat crescendos.

Adele initially creates anticipation in this song with the questions she asks and the slow piano in the background. The slowness and questions asked at the beginning help to get the listener interested. The dynamics get louder as Adele's voice increases in volume. Then, Adele stops singing and the song crescendos before the beat drop. She then sings powerfully "So hello from the other side".
