Because of that that made the USSR want to continue to outsmart and out beat the US. Whatever it took they wanted to feel like they were dominating the US.
- The USSR sent the first satellites to the Moon and Venus. That was a spark and the US wanted to do something about it. So the President of the United States John F. Kennedy said that the US will be the first to land a human on the Moon. 
-The United States lands the first human on the moon. When the US accomplished that the USSR wanted to also do that but couldn't because of lack of money. -Space Probes. A space probe doesn't orbit the earth but instead, it explores farther into outer space. It also gathers scientific information.
