The population of Costa Rica is over 4,987,000. Spanish is the official language of the country, however some English is understood in tourist-oriented areas. About 92% of the population is Christian, making Roman Catholicism the state religion. Most working men and women wear suits or dress suits to work. Adults usually wear jeans to be casual, while teenagers and kids wear American-like sports wear and fashion. Flip-flops or sandals are commonly worn around the house. However out in public, older citizens like to be more careful about their appearance. They consider a well-groomed, fresh smelled person an essential when out in public

In Costa Rica, being polite and respectful to strangers is a norm. Men usually shake hands and women who meet will pat each other on the arm. Female friends or relatives usually will kiss each other on the cheek. When men greet female family members or friends, they will usually kiss the woman on the cheek as well. Younger kids usually high five or fist bump when saying hello There is a significant sense of family in the Costa Rican community. It is usual for strangers in rural areas to greet each other with "Buenas" which can mean "good evening" or "good morning".When greeting each other, people ask each other "Como Estas"?(How are you). Many people respond by saying "Pura Vida" (Pure Life) which can mean doing well or "ok". When speaking to each other, eye contact is very important as it shows respect. Costa Ricans use many hand gestures, including when they want to express the word "no". They hold up the index finger and shake it back and forth to express no. Overall, communities are really close and comfortable with each other.

Most people eat three meals a day, mixing in a few snacks and some coffee. In Spanish culture, breakfast and dinner are the "big" meals and the most important, while lunch is more of a snack. A main part of every meal in Costa Rica contains rice and beans. At breakfast, a common breakfast is gallo pinto, which is a mixture of rice and black beans. A common lunch's and dinner's are empanadas, arroz con pollo(rice with chicken), and Tamales(see above). Tortillas and fruits such as bananas, mangos, pineapples, and watermelons are also popular.

Dancing is very popular among the people of Costa Rica. There are many native dances such as the Punto Guanacaste, the cambute, and the maypole. However, they do dance many normal Latin dances as well, including salsa, merengue, and cumbia. In music, most people prefer calypso or regue. The instruments that are mainly used are the trumpet, guitar, xylophone, and accordian. A couple native instruments that musicians love o use are the quijongo(a stringed instrument) and the guiro. Moving to art as in paintings or creations, many people are familiar with the colorful carretas that come from Costa Rica. Many indeginous groups make clay masks of animals such as jaguars or tigers in order to "scare of Spanish invaders".
