         <description><![CDATA[<div>After Hancock's sloop was taken, angry colonists towed a custom collector's private ship into the town, brought it to the Tree of Liberty, and gave it a mock trial before burning it down. <em>Liberty </em>went on to serve as a British Navy ship, and was eventually scuttled by colonists. It was the first act of colonial physical rebellion against British taxation. It made John Hancock famous in the colonies.</div>]]></description>
