You may look at what rooms others are in by looking upwards at their paper clips. You can never look inside a room you are not in. The goal of the game is to have everyone escape. You must all work together to find a way out, except for the murderer. The murderer's goal is to kill everyone else before they can escape.

In the beginning of the novel, when his parents first tell him that his cousin, Jun, was killed by the police, he can tell they are not telling him everything, but he also sees that it is not their fault they do not know the whole story. It’s Tito Maning’s. When his mom says, “‘I don’t know everything,’ Mom continues. . . ‘you know how [Dad’s] family is. . I don’t think he wants to know any more,’” (page 23) it reinforces the feeling of uncertainty both Jay and his mom feel about the truthfulness of Jun’s story. The significance of this quote is in the way Jay’s mom admits that she doesn’t know everything, and that maybe Tito Maning is hiding something. Tito Maning not telling Jay’s parents everything kind of creates a feeling of secrecy, even though Tito Maning might not have meant for it to be a secret in the first place. When Grace says, “‘[Dad] wants us to be safe and successful. I trust his decisions,’” (page 112) it seems like she is accepting that she does not really know what happened to Jun after her father kicked him out of the house, but also that he does not want anyone to question it, so she is not. This quote is significant because everyone just believing Tito Maning and not seeming to care about Jun is what makes his story into a secret. Often, stories are made into secrets by people just avoiding the topic, which is what happens in the beginning of the novel. Tito Maning makes Jun’s story into a secret by not telling anyone the whole story of what happened to him. Maybe Jun’s story should not be a secret, but Tito Maning makes it into one. In life, secrets are often created where they don’t need to be. 

Later in the novel, as Jay learns more about life in the Philippines, he can see why so many stories stay secret. The Filipino government doesn't like people criticizing them, so the government will sometimes even kill journalists who write about how they disapprove of it. However, the way people like Mia and Brian Santos still want to expose truths illustrates how so many people can see that not keeping things hidden will benefit people more than if no one knows. Brian Santos, Mia’s college professor says, “‘So, with every story I consider pursuing, I ask myself if I am willing to die to bring that truth to the world,’” (page 195) before helping Mia and Jay find the place Jun lived. This quote expresses how dangerous it can be to expose the truth, but also how important it can be to show people stories that tell them things maybe the government does not want to hear. Mr. Santos’s comment about how dangerous revealing truths can be shows the reader that yes, it is dangerous to criticize the government, but also that sometimes the truth is more important than one person’s safety. Another quote that illustrates how important uncovering truths is Mia saying that being a journalist is not safe, “‘. . .not if you want to do political or crime reporting. Not if you want to find the truth,’” (page 122). This quote is similar to the previous one because they both show how important some people think revealing truths is and that people will do it despite possible danger that would come with it. An examination of this quote reveals that Mia knows that she has to be a journalist so she can change something in her country, but also that she acknowledges the risk she takes. These people wanting to uncover truths even though it is risky show the reader that there are a lot of things in the Philippines, and everywhere that should be known by the general public. Both Mr. Santos and Mia know that uncovering truths can help more people, so that is why they are journalists. They know that exposing stories that people don’t know about is more important than anything else. 

At the end of the story, when Jay and Grace, his cousin, know most of Jun’s story, they want to confront Tito Maning about it. They want to tell him what they know and that he is wrong thinking that Jun was addicted to drugs. Their desire to explain to Tito Maning the story they know goes back to the theme, some secrets don’t have to be kept. Later, after Jay goes back to Tita Chato and Tita Ines’s house, he meets up with Mia. She talks about maybe writing an article about Jun’s story, how  “‘. . . if [she] could write a good enough piece about, there might be wider interest. . .It might show what’s happening here in a new light’” (page 306-307). Someone talking about how other people knowing Jun’s story might show them something new about the current state of the country. This is important because people knowing a different story about how terrible the War on Drugs is could make them want to take action. If no one spoke out about the way the drug war is affecting communities, no one would care, and more and more people would be killed. But since Mia, Jay, and Grace cared enough to look into the reason Jun was killed, more people could start to care about the effects of the war on drugs.

Have you ever been worried or embarrassed? If so, you might find yourself relating to the main character in the story It's that it Hurts. In this story, the main character had gotten expelled from his school for getting in a fight with another classmate. The story revolves around his worries and past experiences with systematic  racism and injustice, along with his memories of his family and school staff. The “it” that hurts in the title is the main character's mental health, embarrassment, and worries because of what his parents will think about him being expelled, being examined by the school nurse, and the systematic racism brought upon him from his school. 

The first reason the “it” that hurts is his embarrassment and worries about what his parents will think about him being expelled is his inner monologue on page 21. The text says “Maybe they didn’t expel me from school. Maybe it ain’t so after all.” (2) This means that the main character is in denial about being expelled. It proves that he is worried about being expelled and that it hurts him mentally. The author also writes “What am I going to tell mother? And when dad gets home from the fields, he’ll whip me for sure,” on page 21, line 8. This means the boy is scared of what his parents will do about him being expelled. Because he is worrying about this, it hurts him, proving that the “it” that hurts is his worries about what his parents will think about him being expelled. 

Furthermore, the “it” that hurts is also the character's embarrassment and worries about the school nurse examining him. This is proven on line 42 page 23 when the author writes “I had just walked in and they put me in with a nurse all dressed in white. And they made me take off my clothes, examining my behind.” This reveals that the nurse was examining the main character for no reason made apparent to him. The nurse was overstepping his boundaries and invading his personal space as well. This shows that he has been through uncomfortable experiences that will stick with him throughout his life. In addition to this, on line 53 page 23, the author writes “I was so ashamed because I had to take off my pants, and even my underwear, in front of the nurse.” This quote shows how ashamed he is about the nurse examining him and his embarrassment. This quote matters because it explains how he felt hurt by this action, proving the “It” that hurts is also his embarrassment. 

Lastly, the “it” that hurts is the main character's embarrassment and worries because of systematic racism at his school. The text reads “Hey, Mex... I don’t like Mexicans because they steal”. (Line 101 p 25) This means his classmates are mistreating him and participating in saying racist things to him. This quote leads up to the main character punching the kid who says this, proving that he was hurting mentally having to deal with these comments. The author also states “The Mexican kid got into a fight and beat up a couple of our boys.” (Line 132, pg 26) This shows us that even the teacher, who was saying this, excludes him. They use “our boys” to talk about the students other than the main character, and then says “The Mexican kid” like his race makes him different from the rest of the kids. This proves that the teacher participates in systematic racism at his school, leading to him hurting inside because of the unfair circumstances he is put in. 

All of these pieces of evidence demonstrate why the “it” that hurts is the main character’s embarrassment  and worries. They demonstrate what exactly he is worried or embarrassed about, and how it affects him. In conclusion, the “it” that hurts is the main character's embarrassment and worries about what his parents will think about him being expelled, being examined by the nurse, and the systematic racism from his school.

We built our helmet with a bubble wrap and poster board shell. The inside, where the egg is, has crumpled up paper that should work as a crumple zone, the egg will be in the middle of that. We wanted to make the device light so that it would have less potential energy which would convert to kinetic energy as the device falls. If the device has less kinetic energy while it’s falling, the collision won’t be as hard and the egg won’t be hit with as much force. The bubble wrap will help absorb the force of the collision between the egg drop device and the ground. The crumpled paper will also absorb the force of the impact and protect the egg. Similar to a car, our egg drop device kind of has a crumple zone, the outside shell, and a passenger compartment. This should help the egg stay protected by making the force of the impact take longer to reach the egg, which decreases the force of the sudden deceleration on the egg. The poster board should help keep the stuff inside it from getting crumpled, similar to the way a car passenger compartment can’t crumple, so the people stay safe in a collision. Our egg drop device has many components similar to that of a car to keep the egg inside of it protected from a fall.

Harvard

Harvard was established in 1636 when America wasn’t even America yet. At that time, racism was just becoming a societal construct in the New World. Harvard University is the oldest university in the United States. Today, Harvard is frequently referred to as one of the most prestigious schools, it is even an “ivy league” school.  This label is misleading however, Harvard has greatly contributed to building a hierarchical structure in schools, and our society, as well as contributing to the spreading of racist and assimilationist ideas. Harvard has been considered the “best” place to get an education all the way back to when it was first established and the only university, to today, where it is considered an Ivy League university. And since then, it and other schools and universities have been telling people what they want to hear, leading to the justification of slavery, the spread of the concept of human hierarchy, and other segregationist and assimilationist ideas such as the Talented Tenth and the No Child Left Behind Act, both of which targeted Black people and prevented them from having equal opportunities and rights.

Almost all of the people who came to the Northeastern seaboard of the United States were puritans who wanted to spread the puritan version of Christianity. One way to do that was through education. The first university in America, Harvard, was built by these puritans. The first enslaved Africans were brought to North America around the time Harvard was founded. At that time, America’s whole economy relied on the belief in human hierarchy, which allowed slavery to be justified. Students attending Harvard, a highly thought of university, studied Aristotelian theories.  Aristotle believed in the human hierarchy and climate theory  which was then taught to Harvard students. Human hierarchy under Aristotle was the idea that the Greeks were superior to all other European and African groups; Cotton Mather took this idea and transferred it to have white puritans on top. Over time this hierarchy evolved into a racial hierarchy, which said that Wwhite was at the top and Bblack was at the bottom, and the lighter your skin, the better you are. This being the only form of information taught at Harvard cemented the ideology of the human hierarchy into the pillars of Harvard and the New World. Further Aristotle also believed in “climate theory” in which he suggested that the heat of Africa made Africans less intelligent than Europeans. Harvard continued to teach these racist ideas in its schools to thousands of students. This has greatly perpetuated  the hierarchies we witness in the United States today. 

Influential leaders like W.E.B. DuBois were tricked into thinking that they were getting the best education at Harvard, but in reality, it was a racist and assimilationist education. Harvard educated its students, who grew up to influence the country, racist concepts like hierarchy and assimilation. These concepts teach Black students that they have to be accepted by White people  to be successful. One great example of this ideology being passed down to a student is W.E.B. DuBois, who was a Black man who went to Harvard and flawlessly exudes these concepts until much later in life, when he changed his thinking and realized that Black people should be accepted as who they are. W.E.B DuBois believed this concept, that only the most exceptional Black people were as good as White people, because he was taught assimilation ideas at Harvard. Because of learning about these ideas he created the Talented Tenth, which said that 10 percent of the Black population was worthy of getting White approval. This concept and others like it are widely popular and make it so Black people feel lesser. White supremacy allows White communities to be accepted by being themselves because they are the standard, which continues the idea that White is the best. Meanwhile Black people had to be the best and do more than an average White person to be accepted. W.E.B DuBois believed this concept, that only the most exceptional Black people were as good as White people, because he was taught assimilation ideas like Black people having to be the best to be as good as White people, at Harvard.

An analysis of Havard’s history calls into question what a good education is. People in power think Harvard is a good education because Harvard teaches the students things the people in power want to tell people, even if it’s not always true. A good education should consider the truth as what is valuable and honor the cultural integrity of each student, reflecting knowledge of all backgrounds in the curriculum. A lot of times people think that white schools provide a better education than Black schools. People think this because they were taught to think that white is better than Black. That is just another societal construct that Harvard has perpetuated. Up until the mid 20th century, the school has been perpetuating racism and the spread of concepts like “White is the best” and “be perfect and fit in the mold they want you to”, but finally it has addressed its racist past. People need to be able to reckon with making mistakes. They need to be able to acknowledge their mistakes and strive to do better. Harvard is leading the United States again but down a different path this time. This time they are showing us how to acknowledge mistakes and to learn from them and do better. “Effective September 1, 2023, the University has adopted new Non-Discrimination and Anti-Bullying (NDAB) Policies… The President and Fellows of Harvard College request continuing cooperation at every level of the University toward implementing the University’s policy” (2024 Reaffirmation of The University's Policy). This statement shows Harvard's dedication to righting their wrongs. This will never undo the harm Harvard has caused but it conveys that Havard will be making moves to fix the present. Both of these lessons mentioned, a good education is teaching multiple cultures and valuing the culture of each student, as well as acknowledging your mistakes and making amends based on said mistakes, are important  to understand and apply in real life. 

Understanding the racist past of Harvard and other universities and institutions allows people to understand how American institutions were constructed against African Americans. Most people think that Harvard is a good education, but a good education is not only teaching students, but respecting and valuing each students’ culture and informing students about more than a single story of history and others’ experiences, especially people who have been historically oppressed, like African Americans. Inevitably, society must agree that racism is woven into every system of the United States.

I think I’m not actually a very good “deep thinker”. I just think the same thing over and over or ask myself the same question without trying to answer it. I think that’s what I’m doing in this post.

I guess I don't really want these questions to be answered. Now I feel like we're fighting, but I don't even know if I want to try to “win”.
