She is also on the UTRGV Senators Board for the Department of Student Success. In speaking with Mrs. Bruseth she shed some insight into the use of race in admission decisions, how that affects her role as an advisor and the current state of the use of affirmative action. Texas is not currently one of the 9 states that have banned the use of affirmative action in the admission decision. Being a predominantly Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) she doesn't feel that the use of affirmative action is extremely prevalent at the university because the majority of the student body is composed of the minority population (C. Bruseth, personal communication, May 3, 2022). 
Mrs. Bruseth stated that the best practice she utilizes in her daily work is to stay current with the laws and regulations around the issue. The university provides training on these regulations so making sure to continue to refresh the knowledge on the topic is key. The university also has professionals who are designated specifically to maintain compliance with these types of issues/topics, so utilizing your resources if you are ever unsure can mean the difference between failure and success for both you and your students. She mentioned that the use of affirmative action by colleges and universities is actually in review by the Supreme Court (C. Bruseth, personal communication, May 3, 2022). The case was against Harvard and their tailored admission criteria which includes race and ethnicity in the admission process to create a diverse student body and campus. This case is vital to understanding universities' choice to include race in the review process for admission. The diversity of the campus depends on the consideration of such factors in the admission process.

    This ethical code is important in consideration of the question of affirmative action in education and determination if what the Supreme Courts' ruling will be on the matter.
