I would like to get my students invested in our curriculum. Giving them more control of their learning and investigating their own interests will get them more involved. I am teaching social studies for the first time this year and am planning on using inquiry to explore some of the curriculum.

I would like to turn over more of the learning to my students rather than me spoon feeding them what I think they need to know. I looked at the community unit for social studies. I have a lot of resources. With some of the read alouds, I'd like to take their questions and observations from here and use it as a jumping off point. By using bulletin board displays and posters we can highlight our thinking.

I would like to incorporate inquiry based learning into my science curriculum. I plan on looking at the units that we need to cover and letting the students lead their learning based off of what interests them.

I would like my students to be aware of their thinking and wonders. I might have my students keep track of their thinking in a notebook. I will also make sure I incorporate at least one inquiry lesson in social studies this year. One way I could encourage inquiry is by showing pictures of the civil war and ask students to share what they notice. Once we discuss things they notice, I might have students develop questions or share what they are wondering about the picture of topic.

I would like to have my student communicate their wonders on a regular basis. I would like to start with discussions then eventually branch off onto journaling. I'm excited to start introducing more read alouds that provide the opportunity to incorporate inquiry in my first grade classroom.

I would like to use the inquiry process in behavior intervention. I look forward to helping my students self-reflect on their behaviors and turn the negatives into positives using growth mindset. I plan on creating a reflection check in and check out sheet to help guide the process.
