When the troops were getting close to the capital, they saw the horrors of the Holocaust. With the allies closing in, Hitler committed suicide to prevent being defeated. His successor, Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz, started peace negotiations about a week after Hitler's death. He signed an unconditional surrender that would end all German action the next day. The Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa in  were two of the bloodiest battles of the war. The U.S. military inferred that up to 1 million soldiers would be killed if they were to invade Japan. With the first atomic bomb test being successful, Harry Truman decided to use it on Japan in Hiroshima.
