1.) What are your initial impressions of Curley?

Curley originally came off as very spiteful and ominous. In many ways Curley asserts his dominance on others, and he tries to prove his masculinity by picking fights. He also knows that nothing will happen to him because he is the bosses son, which makes it easier for him to act however he wants. He is very paranoid about his wife being with other men, which makes it easier for her to get into trouble.

2.) Why do you believe Curley picks a fight with Lennie?

Curley doesn't like big guys because he himself is small and didn't like Lennie smiling at him being made fun of. Although Lennie was not one of the men mocking him, he could have also attack Lennie because the other men had been working on the ranch longer, were skilled workers, and were more important, meaning his father might not approve of him fighting them.

3.) What effect does Curley's presence have on George and Lennie?

Curley's hatred towards bigger guys invokes fear in George for Lennie's reputation. He doesn't want Lennie to get into any trouble, therefore Lennie must be extra cautious. Lennie is to 'dumb' to be scared of Curley or not, but George is worried Curley could make them loose their jobs.

4.) What advice does George give Lennie about dealing with Curley? Why? Do you think this is good or bad advice?

George warns Lennie to not get involved with Curley or his wife and to keep his distance. He does so because he senses how hotheaded Curley is and is aware he is always ready to pick a fight. Curley's also very possessive over his wife. He is constantly paranoid that she is with someone else. Overall, the advice George gives Lennie is good, but in the end, Curley's behavior can not be controlled.
