Adoption/AdOpt

There are a variety of services available for looked after children in Trafford but the first one I'm going to speak about is the Adoption service. There is a Trafford Adoptive Team put in place which gives explanations to both young children and adoptive parents and guides them through the adoption process. The main service, however, is the AdOpt service, the adOpt programme has been developed over many years and is in collaboration with the 'Four4adoption' programme. Together, they provide excellent training for adopters of children aged 3-8 which means that although it doesn't directly benefit the children, it makes the people who will be adopting them the best version of a parent they can be which benefits the children in the long run.

Fostering

Within the actual Trafford council there is a lot of guidance and help surrounding fostering both for the children being fostered and adults doing the fostering. The aim is to keep children in the same area that they've lived in to avoid confusion and to keep the children's lives as familiar as possible. Sessions are held with both professionals in fostering and actual foster parents where aspiring foster parents can go to gather information on the subject or to ask any questions they may have. Trafford's Fostering Service provides help throughout the process and allocate each newly approved foster carer an experienced foster carer whom will be your mentor for the first 2 years of fostering, enabling the process to run smoothly and for the new foster parents to care properly for the looked after children.

Looked after children can attend the same nurseries as children who aren't looked after, in Trafford many different nurseries are available for young children and each one is of a high standard. The nursery the child attends can either be a day nursery or a full time nursery depending on how much the parent works or how much free time they need to themselves. An example of a nursery in Trafford is Bright Horizons where excellent care is given and each child is given the opportunity to interact with other children whilst learning and becoming independent.

There are many policies in place to support the children homes in Trafford and to ensure that they're being used to help each child that attends to the best of its ability. If a looked after child isn't in a foster placement they will be placed into one of the children's homes and these homes are monitored closely. The 'Children in Care Council' raise issues about children in care which are resolved when they can be, this is to make sure that the right amount of care is being given to each child.

Each charity in Trafford (NSPCC, Rainbow Trust, Barnardos, Wood Street Mission) aims to provide the best facilities and resources available for not only looked after children but all children in need. The charities raise money along with the public's donations in order to make sure each child, not only in Trafford, is given the best quality of life and is cared for properly. (For example some clothes or food to ensure the child is kept safe and healthy).

Children's Centres - Surestart

Looked after children tend to need a lot of support either in order to move on from the past families or to push them a bit further with the development of their skills once either in a Children's Home or in foster/adoption care. Surestart is a children's centre which does just that, it focuses on child development, both academically and at home but it also focuses on the parenting skills and both the child and family health. Surestart centre's are the backbone of making sure that each child receives early education and also quality childcare, which is essential for looked after children so they can prevent further trauma.

If a looked after child has any disability varying from physical to learning, they are able to attend a respite service which is basically somewhere they can go to 1. give their carers a break but 2. interact with other children of the same disability and meet new people. The main respite service in Trafford is 'Creative Support' which gives that short break to both carers and the children and give that added bit of support to families caring for children whom are being looked after.
