The Brown Tree Frog was detected in Guam in the early 1950’s. It is believed to have arrived accidentally through imported cargo.
The brown tree snake is able to hide in small places and was most likely introduced in Guam by U.S military ships and/ or planes during WWII. The population of the invasive species has flourished on the island because of Guam's vulnerable prey, small size, and non-seasonal climate. The brown tree snake is also known to be an invasive species in Hawaii and the Northern Mariana Islands.

The brown tree snake has characteristics that include: large vertical pupils used for hunting, wide head, slender body, and a brownish-yellow color. The color of the brown tree snake is dependent on its environment. The invasive species can reproduce eggs once or twice a year nearing twelve eggs beginning at age three. The fertilized eggs are left in protected, dark, and humid areas for nearly three months until the eggs are prepared to hatch. Once hatched, the young snakes must learn to fend for themselves. The snake is a little over a foot after being hatched and can grow up to three to seven feet by the time it has reached full adulthood. Under captivity, the brown tree snake can live for up to thirteen years. The snake mainly consumes the colubrid snake.

Scientists are hopeful that a deadly strain of paramyxovirus, currently under development, could reduce the snake population. The virus would be spread through the snake population through inhalation.
Damage done by Brown Tree Snake

The brown tree snake has negatively affected the economy and ecosystems of Guam. The species is responsible for a decline in Guam's biodiversity. Since its invasion in the early 1950’s, the brown tree snake has caused the disappearance of nearly all of the native forest birds on the island of Guam. The insect population is expected to increase without the presence of avian insectivores, thus damaging the local agriculture. Lastly, the snake is responsible for the decline of the flying fox, a crucial species for the pollination and seed dispersal of tropical trees.

Economically, the brown tree snake is responsible for large-scale power outages and damages to equipment. The snake species causes the power outages by crawling onto electrical lines or entering electrical transformers.

Their damage extends toward the human population as well. The brown tree snake’s bite is not fatal, but can cause severe illness in young children. Secondly, since the introduction of the brown tree snake, fruit bats have shown great declines. The bats are an important part of indigenous rituals on the island, so the decline in their population has encouraged bat harvesting in other areas of the Pacific.

Despite the many negative impacts of the invasive species, the brown tree snake has reduced the population of the island’s introduced lizards and shrubs.
