Mental Health Awareness: Begonia Artworks by Sage Woodward

Do you ever wonder how to describe what you are feeling? Can you perhaps, not explain it in words and just need to express it artistically?

By using art to help express mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar, I hope to change and educate the perspective for the better.

I have always been bugged at how inaccurate information is spread about mental health, whether it is seen in social media or heard from around my own community. The representation that disorders, like depression, usually get recognized for is a dramatized or romanticized version with completely inaccurate information. These sorts of representation is damaging for the community; it gives such an inaccurate depiction that is used to judge people based on their mental health.

My name is Sage, I'm currently a fifteen year old sophomore who doesn't have a whole lot going for them. I'm generally a quiet person at home, only really coming out of my shell in the safety of my close friends. I struggle with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. In other words, Depression and the lovely Anxiety combination. I have always felt alone due to this, it's quite literally my brain chemistry. My Amygdala, Hippocampus, and the Dorsomedial Thalamus have had some sort of malfunction, completely causing a shift in the way my brain processes and adjusts. I'm still learning myself that my mental illness does not define me as a person, and I want others to realize that with me too.

In order to do just that, I created a project that will address these inaccuracies and share how it truly is. During this, I will use an art journal, using a visual aid to draw how members of my own community describe their thoughts and processes. In addition, I’ll be creating a small journal entry using their words; this will help bring to life how their brains are affecting their daily life while shedding light on these disorders. In addition to members of the community I will be using Mayo Clinic, an American non-profit academic medical center, who provides accurate and researched information on anything ranging from physical or mental health.

This can impact the community greatly by giving accurate representation and information; it can not only bring people together but also allow the community to build. My main goal is to learn more about myself and others. I want to know how I can help and support all members of my community. I would like to at least impact someone, anyone.

At the end of this I will have digital drawings of accurate interpretations of Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Bipolar Disorder. I will also have journal entries explaining the feelings, thoughts, or habits that are common during these states of mind.

My main task will to find willing participates to be vulnerable and share their experiences with me. I am very excited to learn more information about myself and others, and to hopefully impact someone for the better. I know most people feel alone in this small town; I want them to know they are not. The most difficult part about this project is myself, mainly because I suffer from many mental illnesses myself that can affect my productivity and time management, but I feel I can overcome it.

Provided below are some common misconceptions with Depression, Anxiety, and Bipolar:

In order to begin with my project, I knew I needed to collect data. Since I want this project to directly impact my own community, I turned to my high school to get my results. Knowing that these people have walked these halls, each with their own experiences and hardships really struck me. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in five U.S. citizens will endure a mental illness at any point of their lives; an estimated 46.6 million in 2017. With this information I know it was very probable to find members in my own community that had or are currently dealing with the disorders I decided to cover: Major Depression Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Bipolar Disorder.

I sent out a survey to a few of my own friends who volunteered for this project. For privacy reasons, all names will be changed or anonymous. I sent the survey out to ten students at my high school. So far I have received five responses, I am currently trying to get in touch with the other five to either confirm their responses or to erase them off my list.

With the answers from the current five people;

Response One: Bipolar
Response Two: Anxiety
Response Three: Depression + Anxiety
Response Four: Depression + Anxiety
Response Five: Depression + Anxiety

I have been able to accomplish three guideline sketches for the concept they wanted to cover in art form. I will post these sketches once they are all completed.

By having these small sketches it can allow me to combine design aspects or incorporate ideas from others into one main image. I want this to resonate with as many people as possible.

My next task to accomplish is get the final sketches in order, that way I can begin to digitally draw each piece. I will be doing this by importing my drawings by picture into my phone, using Autodesk Sketchbook Pro to complete each final outcome.

In the meantime, a later entry will be focused on the results from the survey I sent out previously.

In order to get the most representation for all of the illnesses I am covering, I will be doing two of each Depression, Anxiety, and Bipolar. This means that by the end of this project I will have six final art pieces.

DEPRESSION:
First Sketch:
MADE BY RESPONSE FOUR
"I've always loved the analogy of using a mask to represent something. So it would probably be a face with a mask, that represents the facade I'm trying to put up, falling off. The face underneath would be one of sorrow and pain. Probably crying. I think the background would be a bunch of randomness. Maybe cracks running through the background to represent your world falling apart. But there would be some chaotic parts to show anxiety and the randomness that flows through my head. I don't know..."

Second Sketch:
MADE BY RESPONSE FIVE
"Depression: looking around with dark shadows surrounding me."

ANXIETY:
First Sketch:
MADE BY RESPONSE SIX
"In a crowd of people yet im lonely"

Second Sketch:
MADE BY RESPONSE FIVE
"Anxiety: in a cage looking desperate with a bruise in the shape of a hand on my neck."

BIPOLAR:
First Sketch:
MADE BY RESPONSE ONE
"I would have to say a person with a straight face, or will a small smile"

Second Sketch:
MADE BY RESPONSE SEVEN
"For bipolar disorder, a roller coaster with loop-de-loops and big drop hills, but with visuals of happiness and sadness next to the roller coaster."

Written below are all statements from the nine responses.

QUESTION ONE:
How would you describe your choice above (depression/anxiety/bipolar) in your own words?
***

"Sometimes I have a fit or rage or I lash out at people"

"I tend to get really nervous around new groups of people."

"Me having autism these two are really hard to handle, having been through 3 years of trauma gave me PTSD and that with autism really don't mix well, especially for when school happens, getting help for people like me really needs to be a thing that should be able to be noticed nowadays, i remember being harassed so much in the girls bathroom to the point i now have a fear of going there so i use a all gender just to calm my nerves. i choose these two because they affect me the most and i wish there were more people out there for kids like me, having my best friend die younger than me of brain cancer made my whole life awful, i remember skipping lunches, not talking much or having any energy to draw. when i found out my Ex of 4 years cheated on me with a guy again this year i repeated the steps again but in a less harmful way than usual, i really wish to tame these coping mechanisms one day.."

"Well, to start, I'd say that depression is an endless weight on you that constantly drags you down. You know you need to move, but you can't. All you can do is drown in your sorrows. Sinking deeper and deeper. Yow feel empty and blank. You feel as if you can't do anything. You become your worst enemy in a mental sense. Anxiety is a bit harder for me to explain. Anxiety, for me, is a lot like a sense of being overwhelmed. My heart starts to race and I can't breathe. I feel jittery and feel like the entire world is staring at me and judging me. My every move is being watched like a hawk and if I screw up in the littlest way, I am dead meat. I don't know if others would describe it that way, but that's just me."

"Depression is feeling trapped in my head with demons swarming me with no way out. Anxiety is like being suffocated and yelled at with no way to make it stop."

"Over stressing simple things, worrying, panic attacks, thinking of worst possible situations."

"Depression isn't just feeling sad all the time; it's way more than that. It's feeling like no one cares about you. It's a loss of interest and energy in anything, sometimes you're just too depressed to even get out of bed, let alone even move a muscle. You could be hanging out with your best friends and then suddenly want to go home, because you're drained and have no interest in hanging out. It's not that you hate your friends, you're just not interested in the moment anymore. It causes you to not sleep and just contemplate your life."

"Anxiety isn't just fear, and it's way more than panic. It's overthinking everything, even the simplest things. Many things cause anxiety, especially in school. Things like presenting to the class, getting called on to answer, worrying if you say the wrong answer everyone's going to think your dumb, etc. You literally just overthink every little thing, and it builds up in your head until you can't hold anymore, and you have an anxiety attack. You zone out repeatedly, and you ALWAYS bounce your leg when you're anxious. You always feel like people are judging you when they're clearly not, and like there are always eyes on you (This can sometimes even lead to schizophrenia). Anxiety is NOT narcissism, not even a little bit. It's literally the opposite. You're not looking for attention or trying to be full of yourself, you're literally just trying to blend in and keep yourself from screaming at the end of the day. it keeps you up at night, making you feel anxious of anything that happened between yesterday and 6+ years ago. Bipolar disorder is like riding a roller coaster, but with your emotions. You can be happy and hit the highest of highs, with some loop-de-loops on the coaster, then immediately go down that hill drop and reach the lowest of lows; kind of like depression but way quicker. It can literally happen out of nowhere."

"It feels like your dying its like your alive but no one is paying attention to you its like your drowning"

"I'm overwhelmed with anxiety and stress, let along depression due to family problems, drama at school, and just school in general."

QUESTION TWO:
What is something you'd like to tell someone who suffers from the same thing you do?
***

"do something you like it helps me alot"

"Just try to do things that expend your energy. Join a sport, go for a walk, or just go dance. If you are having a really hard time focusing, figure out what the distraction is and move it into another room. Or maybe take frequent breaks maybe every half hour to doodle or do something that you have the impulse to do while you work. Hope this helps."

"To anyone in the school who suffered under the same things i have, you are not alone. This school just doesn't recognize the hurt and the pain we have gone through to get here. it hurts me especially to see councilors take in jocks with "depression" rather than us who have real world problems to help us. this should go out to everyone, even adults..NOT EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT WE GO THROUGH!! stop lying in our faces that we can " get over our depression/PTSD and leave it in the past." you must be able to get help for it in a healthy way and manner, the way this school hold their mental health kids or kids with a learning disability like me is unfair and needs to be done about it instead of us being pushed to the side being labeled as " loners." I beg of you, change it, and don't make the same mistake twice."

"Tell someone. Don't wait until you feel like you're falling apart. Don't keep your voice hidden. It'll only make things worse."

"Don't let your inner demons win even when you feel weak. "You were put on Earth to create Heaven" -Emerson Barrett."

"If you ever need a shoulder to cry on or arms to be held in or someone to cuddle, im always here."

"I don't really have much advice, but just try to find good coping mechanisms. Listen to music or podcasts, or even just draw or write you emotions out. Text a friend you trust and just kinda let everything out. Please don't resort to hurting yourself. You will regret it later on."

"i'm sorry i wish i could take your pain away because i know how you feel and i know that you don't want to be here but you got this we got this i love you"

"tell them what they can do differently to try help their mental state"

QUESTION THREE:
Is there a common misconception you would like to address?
***

"that bipolar is just from happy to angry"

"ADHD and bipolar. I am not bipolar but could check off A LOT of the bipolar boxes. ADHD is crazy and affects everyone differently. For me personally, I get really emotional really easy, like I can go from being happy to rage in a second. It also makes me impulsive when it comes to trying to do work, I want to do everything but the work. Just power through, if you get super mad, immediately separate yourself from the situation and go cool down, or if you can't then do some breathing. Do not just blurt out some angry words, if you do, try and apologise either in the moment or later. I don't have any ADHD medicine but I do sports to keep my energy down and it really helps. I see that I can focus a lot better because I'm not all pent up. Good luck out there you guys."

"Everything, your councilors at the school, even police see us kids with a art project or acting normal and ask us prison questions such as " what do you think you are doing" or the common. " what are you doing with that sharp object." DID IT LOOK LIKE I WAS GOING TO HURT SOMEONE?! it hurted me to be compared to someone who would hurt the school and it makes me wish i never attended WPMS or WPHS, your whole plan of " diversity." and "coming together." sucks, The Beatles did it WAAAAY better and i'm honestly pissed about this whole misconception thing and i ask everyone that it should be stopped now than sooner. The handling of people who look normal like me but have autism is honestly ridiculous, they focus more on their jockey jocks and bratty mean girls then the strong Veronica Sawyer in their school ( yes, thats a pop culture reference) but you need to do something to fix the school's problem about dealing with their students. i've been given 5 councilors last year and it was hard for me to even wind down!! my personal one acts like a creep and the other i have serious trust issues about and absolutely cannot trust anyone ever since my 6th grade of middle school, police scare me even though i want to be one, they scare the crap out of me as one at the middle school threaten to taser me for no reason. so in summary. STOP ASSUMING STUFF FROM US PEOPLE,ASK KINDLY AND CALMLY!!!"

"That every single thing in your life becomes centered around your mental disorder. Like, if you're having a bad day and everyone is blaming it on your mental illness or medication."

"Not everyone's anxiety or depression is the same."

"No"

"I already kind of addressed it, but anxiety is not narcissism. Narcissism is being full of yourself and thinking you're all that and a bag of chips, whereas anxiety is being in sort of a state of panic at all times, except it isn't just panic."

"Just because we don't look sad doesn't mean we don't have depression. just because your sad does not mean your depressed"

"not that i can think of"

QUESTION FOUR:
Any final thoughts?
***

"No"

"not really"

"I'd say that it might be better to address something like ADHD or ADD in a little comment or something because I could check off a lot of the boxes that I know are not caused by any of the above things. Thanks!"

"I honestly thank you, whoever you are for this. i may not be great at all about being normal and adjusting to life here without the people i really trusted back in the day, but with me and my invisible friends, i think i can be able to manage all of this world stuff if everything works out in a good way or so, who knows, ill just have to find out later on in the day of my life. for now ill turn on my beatles music and read Jojo's Bizarre Adventures, care to join? ill let you read part 1/ watch part 1 with me if you wanna be friends an all.."

"I think you pretty much covered it all."

"Not at the moment."

"Nope :)"

"Im sorry"

Drowning. A constant battle between trying to reach air as the waves beat against your will, the feeling of control slip away from your body. Drowning is one of the most used words to describe mental illness; it’s said to be a constant game of life and death. I have lived with my own mental illnesses, classified as Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder. I often feel alone, constantly in doubt of the actions that I do, or just so exhausted I can barely move. The repeating thought I’ve always had was, “Why can’t anyone understand?”. I wanted to be ‘normal’, like all the happy faces I see everywhere else; but what I didn’t realize is I’m not as alone as I feel. An estimated 46.6 million people in 2017 were recorded to have any ranging scale of mental illness. I wanted to learn more about myself and others, using mental health awareness as a bridge between the two. To introduce this, I came up with an idea to give members of our community artistic visuals to their descriptions of how they feel. Art is powerful, it is adaptable and one of the most impactful forms into today’s society, which is why it is perfect for this project. Volunteers completed a twelve question survey, ranging from questions about their symptoms to how it has affected their own personal lives. In this wild adventure of people around me, I also learned many things: How to see the bigger picture, the dangers of procrastination, and how I need to honor self validation.

Seeing the bigger picture is something that I was bound to learn more about, especially for this project. Often I can become overwhelmed in my own thoughts and emotions. I forget how complex everyone else is and that I’m not alone in this strange existence. Reading the answers of the surveys really changed my perspective, especially since I have known these volunteers very closely. It’s surprising how there always seems to be something new or unexpected about a person. With all the answers bundled together, it actually gave me a common trend that followed in many of the questions. Using that information helped me realize how we are all similar is some aspects, and for some it may be relating over a mental illness. To apply this in my own current life, I realize how just a few simple words or actions can completely impact a person. I think others, as well as myself, forget how powerful and capable humans actually are. It makes me think about every step I take, every breath I breathe. I want to be a positive influence or impact on someone’s life, which is why I’m glad my project can directly correlate. I must admit doing the project made me look at not just a school community, but humans as a whole.

Procrastination is not a new lesson for me, but more of a demanding reminder of that lesson I continue to ignore. I know many of us, if not, all of us, have procrastinated on chores or other tasks. It just so happens at the time I am writing this speech is less than 24 hours before I have to present it. It’s odd that this lesson is so important, yet myself and others refuse to learn it properly. In my project it was something I needed to learn, and quickly, since even missing just one day could send the entire project back by a heavy workload. I needed to make sure to get in contact with my volunteers, complete the sketch ideas, and update my blog as soon as possible. Though procrastination may not be a one and done lesson, it still contributed heavily to the project. I feel more confident that for future endeavors, I can keep my tasks in an organized timeline, giving myself optimum time for any setbacks that I may not be able to control.

The final, and I believe to be the most important lesson I have taken away from this experience is simple: self validation. Many of the responses I read have dealt with issues I have faced myself, and the pattern that shows is the victim believes that THEY are the one defective. That THEY could be better, or do better. This has been forced into our minds as children— that issues always have someone at fault. Obviously the common thing to do is blame the self, since most humans have underlying insecurities that directly impact them. The reason many of these insecurities exist is due to a mental illness. In my project, this was very much the case. All participants reported blaming themselves time and time again over something they could not control. This can be managed by introducing self validation, the action of validating any emotions or concerns, yet not placing blame or accusations on the self. By introducing the self validation into my project, it helped increase my productivity, especially because I often fell into a slump of not wanting to continue or put forth my best effort.

In conclusion, my project has changed my view point on many lessons that appeared in my work: seeing the full picture, procrastination, and self validation. I can now apply my new findings into my future and present, knowing how to change and better myself as a person. I am grateful to have worked on this project. It has given me many opportunities to find more about the others around me and ultimately, myself.
