1. Sound Hunt
Have students look around the room to identify objects that begin or end with a certain sound. This helps with their identification of initial and final sounds.

2. What Nonsense!
Have the children close their eyes as you read a familiar book to them. (Closed eyes will help them concentrate on what they’re hearing.) Reread the book a few times, but during each read-through change a word to a similar word, nonsense word, or any word that changes a sound of the original word. The challenge is for students to recognize a change and explain what that change is.
EX: "Brown bear, brown bear" becomes "rown bear, rown bear." Children should notice that the first sound has been dropped from the word.

1. Draw It
Using words from a lesson or read-aloud, give students a word and have them draw what they think it means. They can share with the class or one another. Their answers might even be silly! Discuss as a class what it really means and have students draw a new picture to fit the real definition.
This can be adapted in many ways to fit student, class, or ability needs. Students can act it out instead if that fits better with their needs. It can be used, as well, for teaching things like prefixes, suffixes, and endings as well.

2. Intensity Meter
When discussing descriptive words and their synonyms, students can play a game to rate “intensity.” Labeling areas in the room, “little” “a good amount” or “a lot," have students go to the area they feel matches the intensity of the word and discuss
EX 1: Words that mean mad. Compare the intensity of angry to furious.
EX 2: Words that mean something looks nice. Compare the intensity of pretty to gorgeous.
This game can be adapted to meet the needs of learners in the classroom as well. Students can use hand gestures, dance moves, signs, etc. to communicate their ideas.

Explore the world together and have conversations!
Visiting places such as aquariums, zoos, or museums can help your child pick up on topic specific vocabulary and learn plenty of new words. Discussing the events with them afterwards and using simpler words to take turns defining new words they’ve learned can help them to better understand and develop their vocabulary. These conversations can be had without the extra adventure to! Talking to your child and helping them to define and remember new words will help with their reading and comprehension abilities.

1. Reader's Theater
Have groups of students rehearse then perform plays for each other. They’ll need scripts to read from and it will help if these scripts are formed from books they know well. Work with students to read their lines like they would if they were really speaking them as their character. Rereading and aiming to make the dialogue sound realistic will help them gain fluency.
This activity is easy to manipulate to fit student needs. Students can be grouped by reading level and accommodations can be made for students who may feel uncomfortable or shy. Students are able to be active as well with this activity.

2. Choral Reading
Choose a short story that students can read and make sure every child has a copy. Read the story out loud as the class follows along and model fluent reading. Then, read it again but have students join you. Choral read the story together 3-5 times then have them read it independently.
This can also be done in groups derived from reading levels so that the story can fit with each child’s needs. Students may also read with you one-on-one if extra help is needed after choral reading.

With a story map, students can focus specifically on what is important in the story. These story maps are easy to change and manipulate based on grade-level and exceptionalities.
