If the sulfur is mined, it is transferred into the atmosphere by burning coal, smelting, of refining fossil fuels.

Sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere is produced by humans through burning coal, smelting, and refining fossil fuels. Other causes of sulfur in the atmosphere are forest fires, sea spray, and dust dust storms. Sulfuric acid and sulfate are then transferred back to the soil through acid rain. This can be harmful to plant life.

Humans add large amounts of sulfur into the atmosphere through burning sulfur containing coal, mining for metals in sulfur containing compounds, and refining sulfur containing oils. This increases the amount of sulfur in the atmosphere, which then creates acid deposition. Acid rain can be very harmful to plant life.
