The first depiction of this phenomena occurs in Johann Paul Friedrich Richter’s Siebenkäs (1796). In a more metaphorical sense, Friedrich describes the doppelgänger as more of an alter ego, manifesting itself to such a degree that the other is actually looking back at oneself-separate from the body. This title carries a lot of significance, and even means that their blood can be used for spells by the witches. They are also exact opposites: while Elena is characterized as the sweet innocent human (for awhile), Katherine is known for being manipulative and evil. The two clash throughout a great deal of the show, causing magical chaos and bringing about questions of self identity. The main element in the doppelgänger is to be feared by them; in most gothic literature, the doppelgänger is meant to be terrifying in a way- "blurring the boundaries between the dream state and reality" (Marquette). There's also a struggle of ethos, because the thematic use of doppelgängers is usually to portray"identity loss and disembodiment" (Marquette).
