What are Doppelgängers?

Doppelgängers in the gothic are twins that are not biological; two different people who are completely unrelated can look exactly alike. The first depiction of this phenomena occurs in Johann Paul Friedrich Richter’s Siebenkäs (1796). In a more metaphorical sense, Friedrich describes the doppelgänger as more of an alter ego, manifesting itself to such a degree that the other is actually looking back at oneself-separate from the body. The idea of a doppelgänger in most gothic stories carries a supernatural dichotomy of good vs evil, and the two persons usually are complete opposite.

The Vampire Diaries: Elena and Katherine

This video is of Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce, from the Vampire Diaries; they are famously doppelgängers in the movie. This title carries a lot of significance, and even means that their blood can be used for spells by the witches. They are also exact opposites: while Elena is characterized as the sweet innocent human (for awhile), Katherine is known for being manipulative and evil. The two clash throughout a great deal of the show, causing magical chaos and bringing about questions of self identity. As a rampant theme in the Vampire Diaries, there are many more doppelgängers that appear, all having a great deal of power just in their blood.

Rhetoric of Doppelgängers

The argument could be made that doppelgängers, as a rhetorical device, are a strong work of pathos. The main element in the doppelgänger is to be feared by them; in most gothic literature, the doppelgänger is meant to be terrifying in a way- "blurring the boundaries between the dream state and reality" (Marquette). There's also a struggle of ethos, because the thematic use of doppelgängers is usually to portray"identity loss and disembodiment" (Marquette). There's a lack of logos, since the exact duplication of yourself with opposing qualities isn't necessarily a rational thought; this character and identity is usually the exact opposite, which is what adds to the terror.
