상하이 타워의 이중 외피 구조는 보온병과 같은 원리가 적용되어 냉난방 효과를 얻을 수 있으며, 건물의 투명한 내외벽으로 자연광을 최대한 활용해 전기 조명 사용을 줄일 수 있다. 그 외에도 건물 상단에 설치한 270대의 풍력 발전용 터빈을 이용해 연간 최대 35만kWh의 전기를 생산하여 건물에서 사용되는 전기 수요의 10%를 제공할 계획이다. 나선형 난간은 빗물을 모으는 데 활용되며 폐수의 일부도 재활용하도록 설계되었다. 상하이 타워는 매년 탄소배출량 2만5,000톤을 줄이고, 종합에너지효율은 54.3%에 달하는 친환경 빌딩이다.
