This directly parallels modern gangs. In modern gangs reputation determines action. The basis for hierarchy in modern gangs is reputation someone with a lot of reputation in a gang. A member with a lot of reputation can easily stand up to someone with a lower rank they are not afraid to fight others who disagree with them. However, people lower in the ladder of hierarchy in gangs have no other choice than to be bossed around by other gangsters. This parallels to Huck Finn because Huck can not retaliate when being conned or bossed around. This is demonstrated in the encounter with the duke and the king where Huck realizes that these men are cons but is forced to accept them into the raft.

Some researchers argue that herding societies tend to produce cultures of honor that emphasize courage, strength, and violence. Unlike crops, animal herds are much more vulnerable to theft. A herdsman could lose his entire fortune in one overnight raid. Consequently, martial valor and strength and the willingness to use violence to protect his herd became useful assets to an ancient herdsman. What’s more, a reputation for these martial attributes served as a deterrent to would-be thieves. In fact, many herding societies were among the most ferocious. The ancient Hittites, the ancient Hebrews, the Mongols, and the ancient Celts are just a few examples of these warrior/herder societies.

https://mlab.osu.edu/sites/mlab.osu.edu/files/Moritz%202008%20critical%20examination.pdf

^ My source

Essentially they fight to maintain their reputation. It is not complete bravery, as they are simply violently fighting. To be violent is not necessarily the same as to be brave. They care about how others view them as being brave, while not actually being brave. They still follow established traditions and support old ideas.

-Syed

Yes, Ryan. Because of Huck's age alone and Jim's color, they are not as respected as men like Sherburn and Grangerford. Both the colonels own land and wealth, whereas Huck and Jim just own themselves, so society has no reason to respect them. Huck is white, but he still restricts himself from some actions such as uncovering the identity of the Duke and the Dauphin. He doesn't have enough power to uncover their identity and create conflicts with them that he can resolve with the wealth and power that Sherburn and Grangerford hold.
-Praneet

I agree with Syed. Huck and Jim are not supported by the Southern honor code as opposed to Sherburn and Grangerford. Sherburn uses violence to protect his own manhood and societal image (as stated in the Code) by shooting Boggs. This is because Boggs ridicules Colonel Sherburn to a point where Sherburn needs to protect his image by “dueling” with him, and his actions are supported by John Lyde Wilson’s “The Code of Honor: Or Rules for the Government of Principles and Seconds in Dueling” (“...(1) words being no satisfaction for words…(2) When words are used, and a blow is given in return, the insult is avenged…”) and other values listed in the Southern Honor Code (particularly violence and manhood). The Southern honor code also supports Colonel Grangerford to feud with the Shepherdsons, to protect his manhood, honor, protection, courage, and violence. The Southern Honor Code allows these two characters already have the privilege to stand up to others, even through violent means, to sustain their sense of dignity.
