The hobbit is a example of sfx working really well, the dwarves are stout, gruff, bent noses, bulbous noses, broken noses, face tattoos, beards, scars. Bringing a variety of SFX materials together to create a look.

Using Latex, silicone or scaring wax, they were able to make a variety of looks, making scars and old battle injures.

Using grease paint to give a dirty look to them, since dwarfs, fight, feast and mine. Using bald caps.on some was also a need, and appyling crepe hair to females also creates a look.

Alien 3 used practical effects for the xenomorph creatures originally created by H.R Giger’s designs. The alien creature was brought to life by using puppetry, animatronics and costumes/masks.

Trained whippets and greyhounds were also dressed in carefully constructed foam suits, paw covers and headpieces to emulate the alien like movement of the Runner xenomorphs, designed to be a deadly dog like alien. It also saved time for animatronic artists to work on larger or smaller more detailed xenomorphs such as the ovomorphs, face huggers, royal face huggers and most importantly the Queen xenomorph.

The use of what they had at the time in the late 80’s / early 90’s (while still wanting to use mainly practical effects without it coming across tacky was very impressive. They would first dress the dogs in an all green suit so that if any part of the dog was to be shown it could be simply edited out to leave only the costume and mask in the scene creating the perfect Runner Xenomorph.

Supernatural:

In this tv show there are many cuts and wounds through the series made by supernatural creatures. To make these wounds they would have used silicone to make deep wounds and then used fake blood in different textures to create depth and realism. They would also use alcohol paints as this works well with silicone and makes a cohesive look on the actor. In this photo they have a broken nose so they have very runny blood as the nose has burst capillaries so there is a lot of blood flow and there for a very bloody wound. They also use prosthetics in this show to show very nasty and deep wounds for instant when something gets beheaded or cut in half to make it look very realistic.

Beetle juice made by Tim burton. Is a movie set in the after life where the two protagonists have at fight off a demon. Barbra one of the protagonists, has an encounter with beetle juice where he chnaged her face to look like a monster. To achieve this looks the makeup artists would use a mask. The look is too big and too far from the actresses face to use prosthetics

In Edward scissorhands special effects is used quite a bit on the main character, Edward. he has some scarring but also through the film he has visible cuts. the scars would've been created most likely using collodion and the cuts would have beeb silicone to ensure that they'd stay looking good for the time they were filming. he also has no eyebrows which would've been blocked and covered with makeup and his skin appears to be very pale as well as the dark circles around his eyes.
