He taught English at the community center in Brwinow - the town just outside of Warsaw, Poland, where I grew up. I walked to Mr. S' English class once a week after school when I was 7 (Brwinow was a sleepy and safe little town). In Mr. S' class, we read, repeated, and memorized one dialogue per week, and then we had dictations on that dialogue. In retrospect, I only learned one phrase in his class: "What's the matter children?." I was a 7th grader and that was my first year in the United States. I came from Mexico when I was 12 yrs. Our first assignment was to make potato salad (literally) so that we could learn English. Needless to say, I don't think he was a good instructor because we did not learn any academic language.
