This magazine drew attention because of its shine and use of photographs to tell stories rather than articles. The Photographic essay was a method used by LIFE magazine in which pictures were chosen and arranged in a way that would tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end. The magazine had a way of drawing attention from several crowds because it described the universal human experience.

This work was controversial because while most American photographers focused on the loving and good parts of America, Frank showcased the good and the bad. Much of his work put onto display racism, mass consumerism, and other issues the American middle class struggled with. His work was not perfect and it did not use technology to add to the aesthetics. Frank's goal was to create emotional photographs, not just aesthetic ones.
