Rigor means you expect student to go beyond their current skill or knowledge level.

Rigor is where a learner is working toward a particular
standard using higher level thinking, students are challenged
to think deeper and get away from lower levels of thinking.
Rigor does have difficulty but at the end the learner is able to
become an independent thinker.

Rigor is an educational pursuit where the students are challenged beyond their ability and asked to persevere until the problem is solved or the activity has been completed with the student stretching their knowledge beyond their current capabilities.
