Description:
This video discusses the map that John White water painted during his initial visit to America. When the map is viewed under a special light there is a star shaped symbol that is believed to have been hidden within the map to protect the location of where the settlers went.

analysis:
This video relates back to the theory that the colony did move 50 miles inland. However, this video is stating that John White knew about the relocation. I think that this could display the red flag suppression by authority. I think that it John White knew where the colony had moved to settle, perhaps he was not sharing that information to either protect the colony. While he also theorized that they moved to the island of Croatoan, he never actually attempted to travel there to see if he could find them due to bad weather. It seems as those John almost did not want to find the colony for one reason or another and was making up excuses to not continue his search for them.

Description:
In 1998 excavators discovered a worn ring with a prancing lion imprinted on it. This ring was believed to be linked to the lost colony. The ring was discovered to be brass and most likely a mass produced item that was traded on the east coast. Skepticism came with the discovery of the ring as it was found with items produced long after the lost colony.

Analysis:
This article is a good example of the bias of perception and observation. As well the article displays examples of an emotional connection. When the ring was initially discovered it was assumed to be 18k gold. Initially they thought that the ring was made of precious materials that related back to the Elizabethan era. The ring related to other materials that had been discovered from the era, helping to affirm their beliefs of the relation to the colony. Because of this initial assumption I think it skewed the perception of the ring and altered the observations. The article stated that "everyone wanted it to be something that a lost colonist dropped in the sand." The emotional connection behind this sentence plays into the fact that researchers will believe certain facts over others because they wanted this to be a legit artifact from the lost colony. This also created some motivation to convince people that the ring was from the lost colony because it would help to confirm the many theories of what happened to the colony and determine where they settled.

Description:
This picture displays the propose set up after the colony ha established themselves on Roanoke before the disappearance. Another reason that it was proposed that the colony likely split into two tribes and joined with Native Americans is that these types of building appeared within native american colonies. These structures are an English style of building so it's very likely that surviving members of the lost colony were able to help implement these structures within the native american tribes they assimilated with.

analysis:
The belief of paternicity can be applied to this picture. Patterns of early construction started to appear over time throughout different parts of North Carolina. While structures appeared to be built the same way, this does not necessarily mean that the lost colony assimilated with Native Americans. One could argue that the native american wiped out the lost colony and then used their plans to build their own structures. It can be easy to see the pattern in the similarity of the structures and assume that it means that surviving members of the colony helped to build them but there may be other reasoning as well.

Description:
This map shows the area within North Carolina where the lost colony settled. On this map you can see the approximate area where the colony settled in Roanoke. You can also see Croatoan, which was theorized to be one of the places that the colony relocated to during the two years that John White had travelled back home to gather more supplies.

Analysis:
I think this map displays the reason for belief of the "unexplained." It was never determined what actually happened to the lost colony and relocation was only one possible theory. This map can provide a bit of context to the situation but in the end it's a mystery that will never be truly solved. Simplicity could also be applied to this image because I think it was easy for John White when he returned to see "Croatoan" etched into a tree and immediately an think that they had relocated there. There is no simple answer to what happened to the colony but it can be easy to make simple connections to come up with an answer.

Description:
This article discusses the legitimacy of the Dare Stones. The first stone turned up in 1937 at Brenau university. After paying the man $1000 for the first stone other rocks began to turn up all over the place with similar inscriptions.

Analysis:
The first flaw that can be pointed out from this article is that the prescription was presumed to be that of Eleanor Dare given the initials. The researchers believed that if this was the grave of the first white child in America then it would surely put their college on the map. I think that the researchers developed an emotional connection to the rocks which lead to obscured rationale and thought. It's highly likely that many of the rocks that came after the first dare stone were fakes and nothing more than a cash grab for the people that found them. Confirmation bias could also play into their research because they were desperate to get their school on the map and any evidence that supported their theory was good evidence.

Description:
This video discusses the disappearance of the Roanoke colony, followed by the personal theories of the two narrators of the video.

Analysis
While the video does present accurate and actual information regarding the disappearance of the colony, a few different red flags are raised in this video. When presenting their own theories, the narrators need to be more conscious of confirmation bias as a lot of the information they included in their introduction seemed to conveniently line up with their theories. as well, I think the images they chose to use and the specific facts through their video display the use of appeal to authority. There theories seem a little forced. As a viewer, I think we need to be mindful of these kinds of videos that try to steer your thinking in one direction without providing opportunities to be critical.

Description:
This picture is of the tree that was found by John White on Roanoke island after returning from his expedition back to Britiain for more supplies for the colony. The complete word "Croatoan" was found etched into the tree and a nearby tree displayed "CRO." This was the only evidence that remained of the lost colony.

Analysis:
John White believed that this meant that the colony had left to live on the nearby Croatoan island. These etching display the red flag of "confirmation bias." Upon his return two years later, John White assumed that the colony had moved or been absorbed by other tribes within the area. Seeing this single word etched into the tree could have virtually meant anything, but John made an assumption that aligned most with his beliefs. He decided it meant that the colony had uprooted and moved to the island. Due to circumstances though John was never able to find out the truth and re-unite with his grand daughter.

Description:
This article discusses a possible new theory of what possibly happened to the lost colony. The article proposes, that based on newly found artifacts that the group actually split into two new colonies and assimilated themselves into different native american communities.

analysis:
Based on pottery and other different items found within the area. The archaeologists hypothesized that they probably assimilated with Native Americans but kept their belongings. This is why colony artifacts where found on native american land. This displays the belief of ideology. I think that archaeologists have a certain way of thinking, and by finding artifacts here and there they can create a reasonable explanation based on their thinking. Confusion of correlation can also be applied to this article, I think there could be different reasons as to why Roanoke artifacts were discovered on native american land but it doesn't necessarily mean that they assimilated with their community.

Description:
This video proposes a few different theories as to what could have happened to the lost colony. A theory that stood out to me is that they decided to move inland approximately 50 miles to a place called "site X." From there, it is believed that they were either slaughtered by existing tribes or were wiped out from disease or famine.

analysis:
While I think this video is informative and stays away from fictitious information and lacks flaws, I think it is also teetering in the area of the red flag proof by verbosity. There is a lot of different theories presented that I think can overwhelm the viewer into thinking that most if it has to true. there are so many possible explanations as to how they may have ended up at Site X that it becomes easy to agree with the logic presented in the video without really trying to take a critical stance. There was also a lot of fluff around the theories presented so while the video does throw a lot of information at you, there is only brief information that backs up the different theories presented.
