While many of them face push back from their family after conversion, they also face misconceptions, like being Anti- American. Latino muslims convert for a variety of reasons; a popular reason being connection to the culture of the Moores in Spain. I did not know that there are no intermediaries in the Islamic faith. Many Latino muslims convert from Catholicism despite the challenges and additional discrimination they can face. The connection to Islam is worth the sacrifice.

Watching this video allowed me to better understand the great "revert" to Islam. Wilfredo talked about how Islam was appealing to him through its simplicity and the inner peace it brings its followers. These attributes could be a way of support for the new reverts who may experience a negative reaction from their families. However, they are faced with discrimination outside of their families as well and are sometimes viewed as radicals or as not Muslim enough for those within the religious community. This change is a brave step for them when faced with so much adversity.

Through this video I learned that many converted Muslims that are Latinos feel that the reason that they come to the US is to feel excepted and to be able to express their beliefs and also encourage the immigrant community to stand up for what they believe in and educate others along the way. I did notice that throughout the video they talked about how they converted to Islam because of the simplicity that the Islamic faith has there is no middleman and there is no misunderstandings and it is honestly a way of life. This video was eye-opening to the fact that many Islamic Latinos have different faiths growing up especially some being Catholic but have found their place and have found the reason behind why they worship who they worship . What I thought was interesting about the video is the need for Spanish Quran since the language is being translated many different times before we to Spanish, I see that Spanish Quran’s are in dire need. I feel that they are constantly having to learn more and more to better educate themselves and their families that are not of the same faith.

This stood out to me because she is practicing what I hope to one day pass on to my kids because I believe you although intersectionality is present in both my identity and my religion I believe you should be able to embrace those things separately and it doesn’t have to be together.

I think that belonging to religious identity while navigating the US can either help or hurt. I think it is completely situational. I feel like it could be helpful for adults because they are better able to distinguish their beliefs as they navigate assimilation into the US. A child or young adult might have a hard time with their identity and belonging to the church because they are navigating assimilation alongside their peers. Since these peers are likely counterparts it seems like it would be difficult for a young child to find comfort in their identity while also trying to assimilate during developmental/ youth years. Still situational, it would very well depend on the family and specific church as this community is diverse.

Given what we have learned about this week, I feel that there’s isn’t a definitive answer because it can go both ways as in I can see the good and the bad. We understand that there are different types of Latinos immigrants in the US and I feel depending on where you fall there might be more positive. For marginalized, fleeing and assimilating this role of having a Protestant religious identity helps in navigating ethnic identity in the US because there are majority Anglo churches and service and worship and programs are in English and the culture is very much someone living in the US. However the negative that comes from this is that since they are not denying their place of origin and history the church’s might act to condem their ancestors or family members that they might have experienced that. The Protestants church might make part of their existence feel invalid and negatively impact their mindset and how they see and act even if it forms a contradiction to themselves.

I feel most confident answering questions that have us back up our response with evidence from the course. I do not feel as comfortable answering a very specific question from one reading. I think the midterm is a good example of a prompt I would feel comfortable answering.

I feel confident about anything from the Latino/a/x identities and sacred, exploring "holy" in the Latino/a/x communities and Latino protestants from the most recent readings. I find those to be easier to explain and elaborate on more. I am not as confident on week 7 or 9 on transnational connections, Race, & Power (week 7) and Ritual & Latino/a/x Religious Communities (week9) those readings were a bit harder to contextualize and understand.
With the right things to review I think I could make my way through the short answer for the ones I am not as confident on but I would need some guidance on what to review or look for.

I would feel most confident in answering questions related to Aponte and any of the theories or ideas about the Latinx community in his book. Specifically about Transnational connections, Race and Power. I would not confident in a short answer essay about a really specific ritual or tradition.
