Millicent used Heather birds to help describe her predicament. When she was lost in thought, "...the sparrows were still chirping, and as she lay in bed Millicent visualized them, pale gray brown birds in a flock, one like the other, all exactly alike... thought of the heather birds. Swooping carefree over the moors... proud in their freedom and their sometime loneliness" (pg. 13). Millicent compares that of a sparrow and Heather birds with her situation. The sparrows all identical and in a group is similar to that of Millicent's special Initiation group. While the Heather birds are those who aren't part of any group, those who are free to express themselves as they wish. This comparison helps Millicent make her decision.

Millicent had made her decision over what to do with the Initiation club. Despite the fact that Heather birds weren't real, "Within Millicent another melody soared, strong and exuberant, a triumphant answer to the music of the darting heather birds that sang so clear and lilting over the far lands" (pg.14). The music of the darting Heather birds are that of the soaring and overall freedom that the Heather birds have to sing and travel. When Millicent made her decision to leave the Initiation club, she heard a melody that was responding to the song of the Heather birds that wasn't actually there. That melody is Millicent's start to her individuality and finding her true self.

Mythological creatures who fly freely with alluring, purple wings are Heather birds. Plah had introduced and made Heather birds an important part by influencing Millicents decisions and outlook on people's nature. Heather birds were first introduced by a strange man that when asked what his favorite food was replied with, "Heather birds' eyebrows on toast" (pg. 12). This symbol is introduced in a strange way and it's supposed to inflict an idea that people are different and unique than that of what is supposed to be accepted in society, like the man that looked like that of a mischievous gnome.
As Millicent thinks of the idea of Heather birds, this idea between a group and individuality forms in her mind. She thinks of individuals as that of Heather birds, flying in the air that can be sometimes alone yet happy for its freedom. Meanwhile, sparrows are supposed to represent the Initiation group, a unique yet popular group of chosen individuals. This idea of Heather birds and individuality leads to Millicent's conclusion in leaving the Initiation group. Millicent plans on being like a Heather bird, expressing herself in her own way and being as free as though she were flying.
