We were not an E-Learning District when the pandemic hit; it was a shift for our teachers and students especially when we have about 30% of our kiddos and families without technology access; for me it is about equity and supporting teaching and learning for all kiddos; we need to remove the barriers.

Good morning! We are a 1:1 school with chromebooks for every student, thankfully. We had already been using eLearning for inclement weather days, so thankfully many of our Ts and Ss were already accustomed to that. I feel like the adjustment was actually quite smooth for the most part. I was able to provide optional weekly live Google Meets for the book I was reading to my students in Spanish, record it and post it on our LMS. Then students answered questions about the story and discussed it in Google Forms. Additonally, I provided technological support not only for my students but also for a couple of my colleagues as well.

I am SUPER proud of my students! Almost all of them did a fabulous job of learning, submitting assignments, and asking questions as needed. Some attended my free digital tutoring sessions as needed.

My only struggle was trying to connect with the one student who was not completing assignments and I believe may not have had technology/WiFi access. I tried calling home at all different times, but nobody ever answered. I left multiple messages. All other students I was able to assist in one way or another (I have approximately 150 students).

Although I really missed seeing and interacting with my students in person, it was overall a REALLY good couple of months!

Our district is not an e-learning district, so it was a challenge when our buildings closed and we switched to distance learning. We had to provide learning opportunities for students who did not have technology at home. One success was that everyone worked together for what was best for kids. We made it work! Teachers held Zooms for kiddos who had technology and we found resources that didn't need tech to provide options. We helped families see how math was all around them and they could use what they already had to continue learning.

Using lots of tech in the classroom in different ways allowed students to be familiar with different platforms and prevented assignments from becoming too stale.
The challenges were that students did not use their school email much during the year--we all relied on announcements in google classroom. That prevented them from getting/reading different announcements from the school district on lots of different topics. It was instructive for our faculty to recognize using gmail throughout the year will encourage better communication. The other giant frustration was the number of students who simply had no access to the Internet to be able participate. It will continue to be a problem as we move forward in the fall.

My district was very supportive of teachers. They allowed for a planning day each week on Mondays and eLearning to take place T-F. Teachers could chose Google Classroom or Canvas. Oftentimes, teachers collaborated virtually by grade level. Teachers certainly went above and beyond to be creative and engaging. I think that was successful. One thing that I think is an ongoing challenge for anyone engaged in eLearning for a long period of time is how to build ongoing relationships with students, especially knowing how learning is social and relationally based.

positive - i connected with many in the community through social media art demonstrations. Many were former students and families with young children that enjoyed the art demonstrations and used them. I had a student that messaged me 10 times a day trying to figure out how to submit work and had zero supplies. We found a way for him to use google draw and he did every assignment and asked for extra work!

negatives I encountered:
this was my first experience with online learning outside of snow days this year. I had to develop an online curriculum that catered to both students that had supplies and alternative assignments that utilized what students had access to at home. Parents were very unhappy with me for even suggesting using a private facebook group as a platform in my teaching and contacted me the first day to let me know. Only 1 student logged into my zoom demonstrations so I ended up recording all lessons and demonstrations to upload on both google classroom and a private art page. I had many students without internet and many did not take home the supplies I put together for them. Many parents express support and then the students didn't hand anything in to be graded?

I made an assignment on Google Classroom and the 1st grade did pretty well opening up their slide and typing on it. Teachers pushed themselves and students to do more with technology than they have ever tried to do before the virus. There was no longer the "I don't have time to learn that" line that teachers had been using--and teaching ramped up to a new level because of the forced technology piece.
Struggle: Not all students have devices. Figuring out one way to teach, or one way to learn, was really difficult. We did learn that we need to integrate the use of Google Classroom more in the coming year, be compatible with how we all use it (there are five teachers), and to help parents know where to find information on assignments.

The biggest struggle was tracking work for 90+ students to keep parents informed when work wasn't being completed. The quality of work for the lower 1/3 of the students makes me sad as these students are the ones we normally work with during study hall or small group when we are in school. Even with "online" office hours, most didn't take advantage of the one-to-one time available. :-(

Negatives- Balancing my family life and teaching life was very hard for me during E-learning. Making sure my own children had what they needed and were completing their work and live meetings was hard! My school is k-8 and the junior high did not coordinate ANYTHING so there were many upset people in the beginning. I teach a hands on class where the senses add to the experience and that was lost due to E-learning.

Positives- I got into a groove about 4 weeks in where I would use Blooms Taxonomy to make a choice board for the students (for a unit). This worked really well. I also had students fill out a "Burning Questions" doc and I would make weekly videos answering their questions. I got the idea from a teacher I follow on social media. Making videos and uploading them to YOUTube and then GC was so easy! The writing teacher and I teamed up for cross-curricular work which worked out very well. I would like to do more of that to minimize the workload of the students.

Improving- next year I would like to increase engagement when new material is being delivered and find a better way to check to make sure students are watching my videos :) I also LOVE doodle notes and I want the students to be able to handwrite notes. My interactive notebook went out the window with E-learning and I would like to bring that back somehow :)

Therefore, I had to communicate this information with them and the teachers. So, organizing all of the data for everyone took some time, but it paid off for sure! The first week was non stop emails from parents and teachers troubleshooting tech issues. However, it forced me to become more organized and remember to also breathe taking a break from time to time. After students became more comfortable with all of the platforms we were using, there weren't as many hiccups.

Positives- the creativity from the kids even through distance learning. The constant re-evaulting the best method of instruction, end of the year iMovies to celebrate our 8th Graders, etc. A year that we will never forget.

I did not work directly in a classroom during extended eLearning; rather I supported teachers in lesson creation, delivery, and brainstorming sessions. I worked with my elementary instructional coaching team to provide optional PD to teachers using various technology tools and best practices during remote learning. I felt we were able to help teachers grow in their own learning and self esteem (may were nervous the first few weeks but as time went on, they felt much better about what they were doing and how they were doing it). One thing that was a struggle during remote learning was organization within the LMS (Canvas) and look of the pages/assignments (three clicks to submission, video pops up in a new window, location of information-on a page, in a message).

Kindergarten Teacher-Most successful was using Google Slides to create a presentation that was easy enough my parents were telling me that their Kindergarten students completed all their E-Learning tasks and lessons independently and that left them able to help their older children! Hardest thing balancing being a teacher working and a mom doing E-Learning with her own two children at different grades using different platforms and learning 30 different apps, extensions, and formats to submit/preform assignment requirements. Also we did not send home our Chromebooks with our Kinders and therefore parents at times couldn't access the "fun" more engaging tasks I would link in to their presentations.

Used Google Meet due to live captioning feature.

Struggle: Getting certain students to engage at all, and certain families to respond to any communication (not the ones due to the crisis - but the same ones that engage little with outside school work and don't communicate with teachers anyway). We worked very hard convincing all teachers K-12 of the value of our LMS and while we had skeptics, this extended learning experience showed how valuable all the work everyone did paid off.

Struggles: Nothing is perfect. While we were prepared and fared well, we also saw that we have a long way to go for it to be what we want it to be. If I had to pick one struggle, that is to make sure that we develop lessons that are going beyond the substitution and augmentation stages which may solve a number of other problems... lack of student participation, lack of communication and collaboration between students, etc.

I am coming from the viewpoint of a Special Educator for DHH students and a coach for teachers working with this population. Students were already familiar with Canvas and how to navigate each teacher's page. Relationships had already been built between the teachers and students and students and students. This helped them finish strong. Our tech team and administrators were also very supportive. A huge struggle was closed captioning knowledge (me included) and consistency amongst the teachers with the layout of each Canvas page. Also, the stress level of some staff. Some are more familiar with what Canvas can do than others. They had to lean on each other quite a bit. All in all, I am excited about the changes that the district will be implementing to improve virtual learning.

It also gave me a better picture of the student as a whole. While I did not always get a response from the parents/guardian, I almost always saw an improvement of student work after I sent the communication.
One thing that I struggled with was the various forms of technology that students had. Problem solving for technology issues would be much more streamlined if students were all using the same type of devices. We have 1:1 chromebooks, but only sent home chromebooks if the families stated that they didn't have technology at home. I struggled with providing support for devices I was unfamiliar with. I also had trouble doing science labs with my students because I did not know what they had available to do these experiments at home.

Our greatest success was student support from our entire staff to make sure students had support from multiple staff (teachers, paraprofessionals, counselor, social worker, dean, ISS coordinator, principal). I also believe our success was connection as a staff (weekly Google Meets and our group text). Credit completion was not as bad as we thought it would be for the most part. We had two major struggles. One was related to technology (lack of devices and lack of connectivity). The other was some students totally shut down. Some of our students really experienced anxiety about digital learning.

We did a lot of games, discussion of current events, mental health check-ins, and even some show and tell. Even if it wasn't content related, these were valuable actions that increased student engagement and lessened the isolation we were all feeling.
Struggle: Student engagement was still difficult to maintain without that face-to-face component that's so vaulable in teaching. Many of our students had connectivity issues, technological barriers, or factors related to their home lives that made school next to impossible during this time.

This environment was using Pearson's Gradpoint. Based upon today's insight: Gradpoint seems to be at the substitution level of SMARS, with the potential to evolve, given it has it's own built in LMS. This has worked well when the students were sitting in the room day to day with staff;whereby the interaction and collaboration could be guided. However, during the pandemic that was not the case; I describe the usual alt ed setting as being like making the effort to herd cats to be productive; during the pandemic it was like herding ferile cats. Zoom was helpful in holding face to face meetings with students where by we could share our screens to look at content together; but process does not allow for collaboration to help guide and build the student's value system in general, let alone the learning process. This was further complicated in that Gradpoint uses a course long approach, it is not broken down into quarters/semesters; the complication came in converting to more of participation grade verse a learned/earned grade. It was difficult to get participation for all the various reasons under the sun.

I struggled with a deaf student who did not have internet and did not like technology. We had to do 1:1 direct instructional time using FaceTime on her phone. What was successful was Google Classroom when she did access it. I created YouTubeVideos using LOOM to scaffold her Social Studies as a support service and that enabled her to see and review videos with reading my lips and reading captions for accessibility. Still it was very time-consuming for me to build.

I also struggled with zoom meetings and trying to keep kids on track. At the same time, I did have some unexpected success with a student who had done nothing during that time. He wrote to apologize for not doing anything and tell me he realized now how stupid that was. He said I was a great teacher and that he had learned his lesson. It was a great boost after a tough couple of months.

I like giving them options on how to demonstrate their learning for me, so it wasn't terribly hard for me to do that and break down barriers to access/connectivity. I think the thing I struggled with and my kids struggled with the most was the inability to communicate. I couldn't synchronously meet with most of my students at all, and I had trouble getting a hold of many of them by LMS message. I ended up calling home for every student at least once, but some never answered the phone. A few of them, not one of the phone numbers worked. One student it took me 9 weeks to get someone to answer the phone.

SUCCESS: All those engaging tools and applications I have been trying to encourage teachers to use for years all of a sudden became critical. In general, teachers plates are way to full to learn ¨new ways¨ when they feel what they are doing is working. All of a sudden, what they have been doing for years would not work, so they were very open to learning new tools, applications, and ways of instructing. Many have already commented that they will continue utilizing their new skills and methods even when we return to brick and mortar schools.

STRUGGLE: Accountability, both for teachers and students. Some teachers went gangbusters pulling out all the stops for every student, just to get confronted by indifferent parents with comments like, ¨Quit contacting my house! My kid isn´t going to do any of your work." At the same time, we had serious students looking for guidance, instruction and collaboration but all they got was a packet that could be mailed back if they wanted feedback eventually. Educational neglect is just as harmful as Covid with very real long term detrimental effects. There has to be adequate expectations in order to ensure that all students are given fair and equitable access to exceptional education. We can´t use quarantine as a excuse to neglect education.

Success: I found great success using Canvas and having the Module organized in a smilier fashion to our daily routine. I also loved using FlipGrid to start our Community Circle every day!
Struggle: I struggled with the workload. Our district set time guidelines and I found it hard to make sure I was assigning just the right amount of work.
