The India Partition was done based on a religious and cultural divide. Islam and Hinduism contradict each other in many ways (deities, social hierarchy, values, etc.). This means that as a minority in the state, Muslims felt that they needed their own land to practice and live freely (without turmoil). Through that side, therefore, I think that the partition was a great idea. This was not the first time a group of people wanted a homeland in history and most likely not the last. In this case it emotionally made sense, but was risky economically. A strong economy is important for protection and a well functioning society; therefore, it is an element to consider.

India rushed into the Partition too quickly as Wolpert states in Document D. It would of been better for India to have divided provinces, then let Great Britain have control, as well as loose almost 5,000 men. The Partition also created problems within the religious minorities, and control. Nehru was the first prime minister who was also thrown in Jail due to a civil disobedience, when just trying to be part of India's movement.

When British finally left India, the Hindus were the majority while the Muslims were the minorities. As document B and C showed, Hindus were reluctant to divide India into two different country. Hindus even stated that the Muslims would suffer economically if they choose to be independent. Hindu were willing to give up some rights in order to preserve the country's unification. They viewed the difference between Muslims and Hindus as a religious problem, while Muslims, stated that two group of people had only few similarities. Furthermore, Jinnah claimed that the country would only ended in destruction if two religious group were united under the same government. At the end, Muslims gained independent and formed Pakistan, but this also caused countless death and destruction. However, if what Jinnah claimed was true, then India Partition was a good idea. Furthermore, the difference between Muslims and Hindus was never solved throughout the history of India, so an independent Muslim country might be the best solution for most people.

As Nehru points out in Document B, while the Indian Partition would not have impacted Hindu India to a radical degree, it would have exacerbated the issues the religious minorities within it were already suffering from. The Muslim population, being a minority, would not have had as many resources or as much privilege to establish a secure independent state — this is echoed today in Pakistan's socio-economic issues. Moreover, other religious groups like the Sikhis had been disproportionally affected by the after-effects of the Partition, while the conflict that had ensued after Jinnah's decree massacred thousands through unethical displacement as well as political protest and violence. Pakistan could have been executed better if it were redolent of Israel, in the sense that rather than dividing an existing nation it could have introduced an entirely new one without imposing stifling protocol onto India's already disadvantaged people.

It would have been better to keep India as one unified nation. There should have been laws to make Muslims feel better but starting a new country was not the right choice. Thousands died in their way to Pakistan, both new countries will suffer big economic hits as one country is loosing a big part of its population and the other one is starting a new country. Even though the split happened, India and Pakistan today are not on the best terms.

The Indian Partition would have resulted in more conflicts between the different religious groups and minorities, causing the already difficult issues to worsen. India should not have separated for two reasons: firstly, as shown in Document B, there would be more economic benefits as India as a whole would be more sufficient. Second, with religion being such an important thing for the people, if these problems weren’t solved (or at least tried to be solved) it would someday become more than what the government can control.

When making a crucial decision to divide, practicality and the cost-benefit analysis is something that should be considered first; even if they separated but had no way to be independent it would not be wise.

I believe that the Indian partition was not a good idea but that it was an inevitable division which could not be stopped. This sentiment is shared by Lord Louis Mountbatten, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Stanley Wolpert. The consensus between these three men is that the division of british India into India and Pakistan would have negative implications on the people being affected by the split. For example, Jawaharlal Nehru believed that the divide only existing for the benefit of hindus or muslims would have greater effects on other minorities like Sikh’s, who will be split into different nations against their will with no consultation on what they want to do and what would benefit their culture. Historian Stanley Wolpert shared a similar view. The hasty borders drawn by the british government slashed right through India’s multicultural heartlands which has continued to cause conflict even to this day. The want by the muslim’s of british India to not be a minority led to other religious groups being ignored and becoming divided in the struggle between the two superpower cultures of british India.
