This gives us the civil liberties of being able to speak our opinions and to be able to have protest on things that we don't agree on. An example of this is something that happened last week. In Bakersfield California there were ICE raids going on and many immigrants were detained. A lot of people disagreed with this and decided to have a peaceful protest about it because they didn't think that it was fair nor just. Bethel School District No. 403 v. Fraser is a case that involves the first amendment. This case is about a student, Fraser, who used graphic sexual metaphors to promote the candidacy of his friend in front of 600 students at a high school assembly. He got suspended for his actions. The question was if the first amendment prevents a school from disciplining a high school student for giving a speech at a school.

Right to bear arms

The second amendment gives you the liberty to keep and bear arms. A specific example is someone being able to use gun in a lawful manner like self defense at home. One case that relates to the second amendment is McDonald v. Chicago. This case argued if the second amendment applies to the states because it is incorporated by the fourteenth amendments privileges, thereby made applicable to the states. The court ruled that the fourteenth amendment makes the second amendment right to keep and bear arms for the purpose of self defense applicable to the states.

Quartering of soldiers

This amendment gives you the liberty that forbids the forcible housing of military personnel in a citizens home. With that being in place you are allowed to forbid any military people from being in your home unless it is 'prescribed by law".

An example is police go to your property and start searching it without having a valid warrant of without having the exception that the warrant isn't needed, you have the right to be able to question them about it. A court case that shows how your civil liberties are protected by the fourth amendment is MAPP v. Ohio. This was a landmark court case that originated from Cleveland, the U.S. supreme court ruled that under the fourth amendment illegally seized evidence could not be used in a state trial.

The fifth amendment protects the civil liberties of protection from double Jeopardy and self-incrimination. A specific example of the liberties protected by the fifth amendment is the right to a fair trail and not being forced to testify against yourself. A court case that relates to this amendment is the Miranda v. Arizona case in 1966. A man was arrested for charges of rape and kidnapping. During his interrogation they had him sign a document that said he affirmed the knowledge of his rights and admitting to the crimes. It was later argued that the police had not violated his constitutional rights in procuring a confession with the presence of a lawyer. The supreme court later ruled that they did violate his constitutional rights under the fifth and sixth amendment.

The sixth amendment give you the civil liberties of the right to public trial without unnecessary delay, the right to a lawyer, the right to a impartial jury, ad the right to know how your accusers are and the evidence used against you. A specific example of this is the right of notice of charges and confrontation of witnesses. A court case where this amendment was violated was the Coy v. Iowa case. A 13 year old was a witness in a child sexual abuse case, they were allowed to testify against the defended behind a screen so they wouldn't have to see them. This violated it because you have the right to see who is testifying against you according to the sixth amendment.
