Escape from East Berlin is about two families trying to escape over the Berlin Wall. The first family introduced is Marta's. Her brother tried swimming under a bridge to the other side but was shot and killed. This traumatizes Marta and plays a big role in future decisions. Marta then dedicates her time to devise a plan to escape. However, a man is also dedicated to bringing their family down. The story skips to 1989 to the perspective of Kurt. He is forced to join the Stasi but faces a dilemma. Should he escape the wall with his family? Or stay and serve his country? He is disgusted with the injustice of the wall but does not want to endanger his family and friends. Both families are faced with one question. How do we escape?

The book "Night" is about a teenager named Eliezer Wiesel who is sent to a concentration camp with his family. Early on, his mother and sister get separated from him and his father. His mother and sister get killed in a gas chamber and him and his father face grueling conditions at the camp. His father is sick and starving as well as many others. Eliezer tries to hope but at this point, there is no faith left. There is a very important connection between these two books. They both include heartbreak and personal decisions in each book that affect the outcome. Many actions are influences by previous experiences. Both these stories are built from basic relationships and good understandings of each other.

The Berlin Wall was a wall built on August 13, 1961, and was about 13 feet tall and 96 miles long. This wall was initially meant to stop defects from the East to the West. This meant that the GDR could cross the border at the beginning whenever. People swarmed the wall and many got to walk through freely. However, this would not last as soon, they added barbed wire over the top and cemented all exits and tunnels leading through the wall. Even with these upgrades, people were still tunneling, swimming, and jumping over the wall. Soon, every square meter was guarded and anybody that came close would be shot: with reasonable suspicion. The economy plunged down and people started dying from starvation. People would jump from high-story windows. The Stasi, A german police force, was tasked with guarding the wall and killing anyone that tried to cross it. Fortunately, in 1989, the wall fell and Berlin united again.

Many experiences that were shared in "Escape From East Berlin" did relate to many events that happened during the Berlin Wall. Many families were split and many family members were killed in attempts to escape. There was always starvation and lack of money. Most of the parts did relate. However, the beginning part of the book where Stefan tried swimming across the Humboldt Harbor was false. The Humboldt Harbor did not actually run under the Berlin Wall.

Instead of a family member dying, her family gets separated as her father and brother leave for the West for work and get separated. She now has to stay home with her mother and oldest brother. Money is scarce in both books and both decide to take action on escaping. Greta decides to dig a tunnel just like Kurt does. However, Kurt decides to stay and digs the tunnel for others. These situations both show signs of relationships affecting decisions. Kurt feels like his life is fine and he has found love, so he decides not to run. Greta decides she wants to meet her father and tries to escape. Both these decisions are made on the importance of their relationships.
