One concern that I have about technology in secondary english education is that the students will rely on it too much and the thrill of reading an actual book printed on paper will be lost. For me, there is nothing better than the smell of an old book and losing that in future generations is terrifying. What do you think about this simple concern?

I agree I agrees that there is a sort of fear of losing the "old ways" and transferring too much of ourselves and education to technology. I feel that as more technology becomes schools and teachers will be pushed to use more and more and books could become obsolete. I think that more can be learned from actually having to read or do research from an actual book and that it should never be totally gone even if technology takes over the world.

I agree with your concern how students will rely on the technology too much. But I think if you add in a nice mixture of the two it won't become such a problem in the future. This video goes into detail about how to integrate technology in English classes.

I agree with the loss of the old book smell. I also enjoy it. However, I do like to read books on my kindle. Something about the convenience and not having to carry around a book and losing my place is appealing. The downfall to that is, if you want to go back and look for something you can't just flip to it. You have to scroll through the pages. Maybe incorporating both as an assignment will help.

Hi Meghan,
I would have to agree with you that students might not like to read paper books as much once they start reading books on a tablet.
Luckily for my class, my students will need technology to complete their music videos. Here is a video link to something similar to what my student's will be doing this year.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbLz9-riRGM

A fun activity would be for your students to create their own handmade books using paper and whatever materials you have. They could gain appreciation for things that are made without technology. Heres a video with suggestions on how to make a book: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvab5GEoSPM
