As the 1920s progressed, jazz rose in popularity and helped to generate a cultural shift. Because of its popularity in speakeasies, illegal nightclubs where alcohol was sold during Prohibition, and its proliferation due to the emergence of more advanced recording devices, jazz became very popular in a short amount of time.

The African Americans were forced to do menial labour for very poor wages in the southern states. They lived lives of misery in total poverty. The KKK made this misery worse. In the northern state, they lived in ghettos in the cities in very poor conditions.

Their only real outlet was jazz and dancing though this was done to entertain the richer white population, and sport, especially boxing.

Simply buying something had a major impact on the economy. Somebody had to make what was bought as at this time, most work was labour intensive. The person who made the work would get paid and would not save the money. He would spend the money too and someone somewhere else would have to make what he bought so he would get paid. This was the money flow belief of John Maynard Keynes. They get paid, spent their money and so the cycle continued.
