Introduction

We all have that one colleague that is just a pain in the you know what. While it may be tempting to respond in kind, Nadine Gourkow would suggest that you did not. Keep in mind this does not matter if you are dealing with a boss or manager or a subordinate. The way that you conduct yourself at the workplace can make or break your career. If you take it all in stride, your employer will know that they are working with a professional. If you fire back a snippy retort, you will confirm to your bosses that you may be better suited for another job.

Rudeness

Much like with offense, it is something that is taken not given. You may think that your colleague is being rude, when in fact they were just having a bad day and it came across wrong. Take the time to address the issue and you will find most instances were just a matter of a misunderstanding. But, how does one define rudeness? Rudeness can be anything from disrespect to breach of etiquette and everything between. If you are truly dealing with rudeness, it is best to clear the air before the problem gets out of hand. Below, we are going to share with you some ways that you can deal with it before people start losing their jobs.

Role Model – Make people see and understand that you are doing business in the way it is supposed to be. Don’t get short with people. Take your time and choose your words carefully. Nothing worse than trying to ask people to be nicer with you and others when you are doing the same things. Treat each worker with the same level of respect that you want to be treated with. That way if there is a problem, they know it was with them and not you.

Don’t Ignore It – It is not going to go away. In fact, if you try to ignore it, you will subconsciously always be thinking about it and that will lead to a breakdown of communication. No one wants to talk to someone that they think has done them wrong. Be the bigger person and address any issues or concerns the other person might have. Perhaps they thought that you were the one that was being rude and decided to be rude right back. Addressing it will reinforce the first item on this list.

Deal Only with The Person That Wronged You – At least at first. If you had someone treat you poorly, make sure you take it up with them first. There is no need to run to the boss and tell them all about how Suzy said some nasty things to you. This does not show that you are grown up and can handle issues yourself. Your boss has better things to do.

Conclusion

When at work, be like Nadine Gourkow and treat every person there the same way you wish to be treated. This is not only good advice for the workplace but also in your everyday life. Work can be stressful enough without having to deal with workplace drama.
