We read this graphic novel with out 9th graders last year and the response was very good. The novel is about gang violence and its impact on the family of gang members as well as the intertwining of poverty and gang activity.

In 8th or 9th grade this is a good novel to cover, because the main character is around the same age as them but (hopefully) living a different life than them.

Focus on crime as a theme and family as a theme.
