Book review (my opinion): If you have stumbled across this novel, you are or were probably in search of a dystopian novel. Uglies is a dystopian book, but it isn’t so obvious in the beginning. In the beginning, it seems that there's just a girl who wants to be pretty and beautiful, but of course, it becomes more and more dystopian after we learn becoming a pretty is almost a social obligation. In my opinion, the book also doesn’t have that “Wow factor” feeling when you read it like other classical dystopian books such as F451 or 1984. F451 and 1984 are my favorite dystopian novels and they are classics. 

I think that Uglies does show a fair criticism of the philosophies of Thomas Hobbes about human nature, society and government. In the book, there's a secret society and settlement called the Smoke. This settlement goes directly against Hobbes philosophy since they don't seem to have a strong lawful force amongst. At the same time, the book is fiction and there's no way of knowing if all the things in the book are possible.

Tally is undoubtedly the main character of the story. I will be comparing her to one of her best friends, Shay.

As I stated before Shay is this very typical Chaotic Good character. She tries to do everything her own way which isn't particularly evil. Tally is this more Neutral Good character since even though she doesn't actively seek to be the good hero, especially at the beginning, she is still a good character that reflects on her actions. 

I would like to compare these 2 character on the more symbolic level though. It seems to me that on the symbolic level they are very much the opposite of each other. Let me explain. Shay is this character that went into making a decision without caring about the repercussions that started the whole book's story. When she escaped, she unknowingly started the whole story. On the other hand you have Tally, towards the end, Tally wants to end it all with the Special Circumstances. She tries to burn the gadget that the doctor gave to her so they could track the Smoke. This inevitably doesn't end the story and creates further complications.

1st conflict: There was clearly a conflict at the beginning of the book for Tally that was man against self. When Shay escaped, Tally was forced in a dire situation. Tally wanted to become a Pretty, but she also didn’t want to betray her friend Shay. It is a great example of an individual battling two desires. She was eventually forced to leave though. In this conflict, Tally is forced between the tough dilemma to ensure her own wishes or to betray her friend's life.

2nd conflict: The second conflict could be the man vs society conflict. This man vs society conflict is more like the man vs society conflict from "Romeo and Juliette" in my opinion because the conflict between Tally and the Special Circumstances isn't based on hatred but on a paradoxical agreement or disagreement. This agreement or disagreement goes along the line of Tally wanting to be a pretty but society(Special Circumstances) rejects that request at the exception that she helps them locate the Smoke. This arrangement is in itself non-productive because it then sparks more conflict since Tally meets her friend Shay.

The reason for it's Fall are not yet known to us, but this surely is monstrously big news. We might finally see the rise of an age where our own traits aren't seen as weakness. God bless the Smoke.

It is hard to single out one exceptionally interesting character because Uglies is a book that explores an alternate futuristic world rather than it's characters. My favorite character would still be Shay. Even though she's a very typical chaotic good character. She dives head first into a decision without making a proper evaluation of the situation. For example, when she escaped the pretty operation, that was a daring escape and I don't think she really thought through the consequences of this escape. 

Because of Shay's action, the story could progress. In a way, she's like the first domino of the sequence. Suddenly, a loud machine noise came from the sky. It was the Specials. They found us. We ran to our hoverboards. David and I got on one of the boards. Shay rode with Maddy. Astrix and Ryde shared one and Croy was alone.  
“ Lets all separate. We’ll meet up in the Rusty, ” David screamed to them. Then we all went in differents directions. The special also split up in 4 groups. 
Behind David and me, we had 2 Specials riding hoverboards. they were faster then we thought. After a few minutes, our hoverboard started to make an alarm sound. It was starting to shut down. We had to land. As soon as we landed, we were surrounded by two pretties. David used the hoverboard as a weapon and I toke a piece of wood. I smashed the thick wood on one of the Special, but it didn’t seem like it did anything. David tried with the hoverboard and still the Special didn’t seem to be harmed. We ran into a river. The Specials followed, but they started to shake like if the were a robot and that they lost function. There was something in them that wasn't waterproof.

After a few moments, they fainted. Tally had the idea of using them as a subject for the pills. They brought one of them back to the Rusty. They tied him around a chair. A few hours later, Maddy and Shay came back. They gave the pills to the pretty. An hour later, the Special was cured. The pills worked. Now all they had to do was to give the pills to everyone. They called some uglies and taught them how to make the pills. What I liked about part 3 was the change of Tally. At first, I didn’t really like Tally, because she was very selfish and irresponsible. She betrayed Shay for her own good. She told everything she knew about the smoke to Dr Cable in exchange to become pretty which was what she wanted at that time. She thinks she was obligated, but the Dr.Cable did give her a chance to chose. Also, at the smoke, she had multiple times to tell Shay and David the truth, but she didn’t. she was afraid of what she will be facing after. If she had told them the earlier, the invasion might have been avoided. In part 3, I see a different Tally. She is more responsible and braver. She would sacrifice herself for the good of everyone. Instead of choosing the easy path to be on the side of the Special Circumstances and be pretty, she chooses the hard path, almost impossible. She knew the possibility of a fight against the specials was very small, but she still chooses to do it. She was no longer the selfish girl, but a very brave girl. At the end of the book, she put herself in danger for everyone else. She wasn’t afraid of telling the truth any more. She faced all the things she used to run away from. 

What I dislike about part 3, is the fact that Tally hide the truth and told lies for almost the whole story. She had multiple chances to tell the people who trusted her the truth, but instead, she kept lying to cover the old lies.  When Shay asks her about the neckless, she could’ve told her what happened. Also, when she met David after the invasion, she had no more reason to hide the truth anymore. She still didn’t stand up and tell him. It was at the end of the book, she finally had the courage to expose the truth. David was deeply hurt because of her lies. Sometimes, it’s not the truth that hurts, but the lies that are told.

I think the antagonists of the novel are Dr Cable and the special circumstances. They are the antagonists because they are the main cause of the sufferer of society. They force people to get the operation to give them the brain lesion. They want to control everyone. With the operation, they changed what people were. The method they used to get to their goal is harsh. They burned smoke without realizing that it was the hard work of many smokies for many years. They did an unsure operation on Az without his agreement

The theme appearance or beauty was present all along the story. In the book, you can see that different character has a different definition and a different opinion of beauty. For the pretties, a good appearance only comes after you get the operation and that everyone looks the same. The Smokies thinks that everyone is even without the operation. The setting of the book is in a world where appearance is extremely important. Even the population are separated into a different group based on their appearance. Most of their goal is to become pretty including Tally of part 1 and part 2.

“what do you mean ‘get it right,’ Tally? Maybe I think my face is already right! ”

The second theme that is present in the book is conformity. The book takes place in a society who demandes conformity. they Specials circumstance wants everyone to look the same so that it would be equal for everyone. The reason that they do this is that the rusties used to fight each other because of inequality due to differences differentiation. The smokies don’t like conformity and they fight against it. They don’t want to be changed and don’t want to look like the rest of the population. The different opinion causes the rivalry between the two groups and the drama.

After years of searching, we finally have traces of the Smokies, a group of runaway uglies! Also, we have found their hiding spot. From what was left on the spot, we can predict that they have a lifestyle just like the Rusties. For a living, they kill trees and animals. Their present is a veritable threat to our peaceful world. Luckily, now the special circumstances have them under their control and have brought them back to their town. My least favourite character is Dr Cable, the boss of the special circumstances. From my point of view, she’s the antagonist and the main source of all the problems.  After reading the book, I find her very selfish and very deceitful. She would use lies to get to her goal. Before Tally, she has sent many victims to find the smokes. She doesn’t care about these people just like she doesn’t care about Tally. She just wants to find the smokies whom she considered as a threat to their civilization because they are uncontrollable. By bring them back to the pretty town, she will have control on them. From this, you can realize how selfish she is. When Tally refused to betray Shay and tell her the truth. She used her parents and her friend to force her to tell her about Shay. This proves her intelligent and her deceitful at the same time. I really dislike the ways she used to get to her goal.
