To me, no matter how technologically advanced we are as a society, some work days really have this somber, repetitive feel to them.

The gender pay gap is something I didn't think much of until the recent years when it became something discussed often in the media. This clip from the Daily Show about the gender pay gap for soccer players really blew my mind when I first saw it. Granted, the pay gap for these female athletes vs. their male counterparts is considerably larger than the national average, it stands as proof that women are not getting the credit they deserve in the workplace.

The Office's "Diversity Day" is about a company's attempt to provide its employees with diversity training. It uses satire to shine a spotlight on the shortcomings of many, if not most, organizations' approach to diversity in the workplace. I personally have not ever worked for a company which has ever tried to provide its employees with any sort of team building or diversity program, and if I'm being honest, it's glaringly obvious. I was pleased to read that some organizations are taking a different stance by implementing adequate diversity training. This is not only good for the organizations, but for our society as a whole.

The idea of moving abroad for work seems like one of the most challenging things a person could face in his or her lifetime. The first point the author of this article makes is that it's okay to make a lateral career move when going abroad. He says "It isn’t the worst thing to be able to do your day job with your eyes closed. It will give you time to settle in without having to worry about keeping up with the responsibilities of an even bigger job." What a great piece of advice! I think if my company asked me to move abroad, I might be slightly offended if it did not come with more responsibility, but, after reading this article, it makes sense to give an expatriate time to adjust without increasing his or her duties immediately.

First of all, I don't think the study cited, about basketball and designer handbags, can necessarily be applied to business decision making. Secondly, I think it's important to consider the nature of a person's intuition in decision making. For example, a person may be very intuitive when it comes to reading people, but not very intuitive reading the market.

This quote from John Qunicy Adams, however, doesn't list specific ingredients for a good leader. Instead, it encourages the reader to look within his or herself, and ask, "do my actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more?"

Mod 7 - Motivation

The cult classic Office Space exhibits Alderfer's ERG theory, namely the frustration-regression principle. The growth needs of the main character, Peter, were not being met, and so he regressed to satisfy his relatedness need. In this clip, Peter tells two consultants in his office that it's a problem of motivation. He very accurately states that motivation stemming from fear of losing one's job will "only make someone work just hard enough to not get fired."

This article is a great example in current events of failed quality control. It's possible the entire world is aware of the recent Boeing crashes related to a failure in Boeing's 737 Max aircraft which resulted in the deaths of 346 people. I can't imagine how the families of the victims may feel knowing that something so small and simple is the cause for the death of loved one.

I cannot think of Information Technology without thinking about SNL's "Nick Burns, Your Company's Computer Guy." Businesses rely heavily on their IT department, and sometimes it's hard to not laugh at the fact that the IT department knows we need them!

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement was created in response to the Deepwater Horizon BP Oil Spill. They develop and enforce regulations related to offshore drilling. The Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill, which was the result of something as simple as failed cement, took lives, and had an irreversible impact on the environment and the economy. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes a massive crisis like this to successfully control quality in the production process.
