This short blog explains why people who are not autistic think that people who are autistic lack theory of mind and empathy. This is important for us to understand because it make us think about how we interact with people with autism and the pre-conceptions we might have. The way the brain processes information may make understanding the behaviour of others difficult but this misunderstanding works both ways! I suspect we all know people who are not autistic who may appear to be lacking empathy and vice versa!

So. rather than focusing on executive functioning as a set of skills children must acquire to behave “better,” we can:

Emphasise co-regulation and relational safety as the foundation for development.

Frame executive functioning as context-dependent — not a fixed trait but something that emerges in supportive environments.

Honour children’s autonomy and agency, even when they resist or avoid demands

This diagram simplifies the arguments about what disables people. You may have a medical diagnosis of autism blindness but arguably it is the environment and people around you that will ultimately disable you. For example Autistic children can become very anxious which will effect their learning capacity. If we do not recognise and support this need within classrooms or settings then our action (or lack of) rather that being Autistic will disable the child and effect their ability to learn. Similarly with people who are blind. If we made adjustments to house building, town planning etc then being blind is less of an obstacle to doing or getting what you need. Putting people in charge of environment who have not experienced blindness or Autism can arguably lead to decisions that are not inclusive of these groups of people thereby disabling them rather than enabling them.

This little video considers rejection sensitivity which may explain some of the behaviour that we see in children with ADHD and why the way we respond to it is really vital. The examples of how individuals counter these feelings are the ways we can help to co-regulate and support strategies for younger children to help them cope as they get older - but this can also be used for all children and is a good way to help build resilience through our relationship model of behaviour support.

This article explains what these terms mean. Echolalia is part of how some children learn language through imitation however a large percentage (some researchers quote 75-90%) of Autistic children will use this as a part of Gestalt language processing to support their language development in the first instance and we can help support this rather than stop it. This way of looking at language is relatively new although in America there is much more work being done around it. If you are interested in this topic please look at the work of Marge Blanc.

The important points are about being in tune with a person to understand needs, that emotions are complex with many words to describe them so finding those words may be hard. Figuring out what you feel, why you feel like that and confusing our emotions and feelings, means we need to give others time, space, and support

There is a free masterclass where you can learn what GLP is, how it differs from analytical language processing and how to approach a child's language learning which differs from the more traditional approach of vocabulary building, expanding, prompting and questioning. It also talks about taking a play based, child led approach and explains how supporting GLP's supports their play.

Anxiety has a tendency to be co-occurring for Autists, children with ADHD, developmental trauma, and other neurodivergence. This little toolkit has some nice ideas that you can use and share with parents about reducing and dealing with stress and anxiety in little ones. Although it says it is for children with developmental difficulty, some of these ideas will be helpful for all children. You can also look at some of the other ideas in this Padlet to help with anxiety such as building relationships, priming, visuals and social stories.

In the infographic column we have a simple illustration of what motivates an interest based brain (ADHD) and an importance based one. Motivation is a tricky aspect of ADHD. Children are accused of not being motivated, being lazy, and the classic "if they wanted to do it they would - they just don't want to". If you have worked with or have children with ADHD you will know how hard it is to dis-spell or attempt to explain this myth. This article explains how an interest based brain works and how supporting an interest based brain can help behaviour and executive functioning and motivation.

We also need to be aware of our own biases and assumptions when we consider how gender affects the way autism presents. It's equally important to think about intersectionality—how different aspects of a person's identity, like gender, race, or disability, can combine to create unique challenges, especially for those who are not neurotypical.

Many approaches in education, therapy, and parenting circles now describe themselves as being “interest-led.” It sounds positive on the surface and it can be but too often, this language is hiding something less affirming underneath. When being “interest-led” is reduced to using a child’s passions as tools to get a child to comply, to build eye contact, or to meet neurotypical goals, it stops being neuro-affirming – it becomes coercion dressed up as kindness and is no longer child-led.

Too often, play is shaped by invisible expectations, or we impose on play to correct, fix, or intervene. Much of this comes from what we have been taught about play: that it should be functional, appropriate, or that children must demonstrate a standardised repertoire of play skills for it to be considered valuable. But what happens when a child’s play does not fit these expectations? Freedom in play means facilitating environments that are free from neuronormative expectations, free from the pressure to perform, progress, or conform. Freedom in play is not about the absence of boundaries, it is about creating spaces where play can expand, move, and belong in all its forms. So as we think about what play should be free from, we can also reflect on what we want play to be rooted in.

This webinar takes what we know about Autism and ADHD and talks about what AuADHD is and what is looks like. It is not a formal diagnosis but we are seeing more children who are presenting with AuADHD. However, the way we research and look at Austism and ADHD is historically separate. This webinar looks at what the combination might look like and how we can support it. The information is about older children so not all will be necessarily appropriate for children in early years

Autism in girls can look very different and not be noticed or apparent until they are much older - even though it is argued the signs are still there. Much of our understanding has been led by a male representation and lots of signs are missed in girls where they camouflage/mask in public, and actions or behaviours happen internally or in privacy or safe spaces. This is a area of research that is becoming more prevalent. This is not an EY website but does give helpful information.

Although a contested word 'masking' has become a explanation for people who are able to able to 'hide' autistic traits. This article talks about the difficulty of supporting children when they have been able to behaviour in a certain way at school but when at home, in their safe space, they need to release or let go of their self restraint or control. This can be very difficult for families and it is important for us to recognise and offer support
