I agree that anybody can be a hero.Contrary to its stereotype, being a hero does not neccesarily mean , money and fame. Being a hero means to be brave even in the face of danger. Anybody can be brave. If someone saves a child from a fire then that person is a hero. If someone stands up to a bully then that person is a hero. Anybody can push themselves to be brave, regardless of who they are.

Yes, I agree. Anyone can be heroes in their own way. It doesn’t have to be a big thing, like saving people from a fire. A hero just needs to be brave and loyal. Standing up to a bully is also a form of heroism. Being brave in the face of danger is also bravery. In life, each one of us display heroism, be it standing up for someone. Therefore, anyone can be a Hero.

I do not agree. Although the stories may be make-believe, their topics may offend people and this may cause conflicts. As Singapore is a multi-racial country, it would not be wise to draw or write anything they want as drawing something offensive may cause conflicts between the writer/ artist and the people who were offended. There should be boundaries to what they draw to maintain peace in the country.

For example, on pg 20, “They lined up outside his door with their shiny faces and fake smiles and bags of hard cash.” He did not explain directly what it meant and for people with minimal understanding of the text, they will find it confusing. He also doesn’t really write straight to the point. Sometimes it will circle around unimportant topics.

I don’t think that having to face hardships or challenges will always result in growths. For some people, they find it frustrating and stressful for them when facing hardships or challenges because they find it annoying to deal with or solve the challenge. For those kind of people, they have a fixed mindset and they don’t think that facing hardships will help them grow. I strongly believe that people with fixed mindsets will not grow from the challenge but will slowly lose interest and motivation in their goal and eventually stop working towards their goal as they think that the challenges are in the way of their goal and therefore they will stop working towards their goal. In conclusion, I don’t think that facing hardships and challenges will always (emphasis on “always”) result in growth

You have to make an effort and be disciplined to read it. There are many names to remember in the story, and Salman Rushdie rarely explains his statements and circles around the same topic vaguely. At first, I did not understand some points of the story and had to re read it many times.

If they are allowed to, then people may write / draw things that are offensive to certain religions or nationalities, which may spark controversy and cause wedges to form between parties. Creative writers / artists may also write / draw things that can cause disputes to start or anger people, which may cause unnecessary problems. I think that creative writers / artists should write / draw after taking into consideration how it would affect the people around them and whether it will have negative consequences.

In general, silence is not very good. I am a bubbly person who likes talking. When there is silence, it feels awkward and unexciting. When there is a person who is usually talkative who is silent, then there is definitely something wrong. Silent can “tell” many things. In fact, silence is the most obvious sign when something bad is happening to a person that makes them feel sad and not like their usual self. However, sometimes silence is also essential. For example, during exam, the entire class stays silent for everyone to focus on their paper. Silence gives us time for reflection and to do our own things other than talking or listening. so i both agree and disagree to this statement

I feel that so much can be done in silence, in fact it is only in silence that we can get things done. Silence allows us to focus, give whatever we are doing our all, it lets us hear our own thoughts before that of others and we can prioritise our opinions for once. Living in a rather busy and noisy world, these few moments when everyone and everything in the room goes silent during the daytime is truly rare. And having experienced it before, these few times when everyone is quiet and thinking of the same thing, I can safely say that this feeling is not a bad one and its amazing, as if all of the sudden, our brains are all merged as one.

I disagree, as some statements may be offensive and inappropriate, which results in harm to others. This kind of freedom cultivates a culture of disrespect and unprofessionalism. Saying whatever you want whenever you want can come off as aloof and out of touch, and since the freedom of speech also applies to others, others may offend you or put you down wth their words after hearing your opinion. The ability to regulate your own thoughts and words is very important asset and without it, the society will fall apart. People with bad intentions are likely to use this freedom to their advantage and even break law or commit crimes in the name of freedom.

It builds on our sympathy and makes it easier to relate to others . Furthermore, it builds on our critical thinking. Being put in situations that we may never face in real life, allows us to think of ways to solve the problem and get past the obstacle. Relating back to reality, when faced with difficulties, our minds will be more creative when coming up with solutions. When it comes to problem solving, we would be able to figure out more unique ways to solve the problem.
Hence, I believe spending time to read books is not meaningless as it builds on our sympathy and critical thinking.

I agree with this statement. Anyone can be a hero, a hero does not necessarily have to have superpowers, like superman. A hero can be any ordinary person. They do not need to be a genius or have extraordinary talents. A hero should be humble, kind and caring. They also have to take action, like standing up for others, promoting good values and principles, or helping others in need. Anyone who has a good intention of helping others and doing good or anyone who tries to make the world a better place are all heroes. For example, our parents can also be heroes, they are the ones who care for us, help us when they see us in need and also encourage us when facing problems. In conclusion, I think anybody can be a hero.

During the learning process, we will gain more knowledge and when we are stumped, we will learn to persevere through the hardship. This will make our mindset stronger and we will also learn to adopt a growth mindset. However, it depends on the person. If the person is faced with an obstacle and he is not keen on overcoming it and simply gives up, he will not gain anything and he will fail to learn to persevere through challenging times. However, on the other hand, if the person is optimistic about overcoming his challenge, he will learn to be resilient and next time if he faces the same challenge, he will know how to overcome it. In conclusion, I agree with this statement.

I do not think that everyone can be a hero.Firstly, a hero possess the qualities of being brave, fearless, selfless and being able to rise to the occasion. However, not everyone has the ability to do so. Some people are more selfish than others and will not want to risk themselves for others. Being a hero also means being genuine and having a passion for helping others. While we do have a lot of hero’s around us in our daily lives, the truth is, many people put up an act in front of others and only play hero to earn praise. To me, the term ‘hero’ shouldn’t be used unnecessarily when someone, for example, helps us with homework we forgot to do. It should be used when the person makes a selfless sacrifice for the good of others. Not many people have the initiative or willingness to step forward and do so. Hence, I do not believe that everyone can be a hero as it is truly based on your personal qualities and you as a person.

Those who just want the fame of being a hero can’t become one. People who to be a hero must also have the desired values such as compassion and bravery. Without such qualities, the person who wants to be a hero can’t do what a hero is supposed to do. Also to be a hero the person must have done something commendable such as sacrificing something for others’ benefits. Although small acts of kindness are great they shouldn’t be considered as an act of heroism.

This can happen in different situations. For example, when you fight with your friend and find out you actually were not giving them enough privacy. This value sticks with you for the rest of your life and helps you become a person who respects others better. Another example is when you realise you made a mistake in the previous exam, you learn from your mistake and avoid doing it again. We are always striving for idealism and to become better, so we will grow from challenges to achieve this.

I agree with this statement. Amidst the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, silence is what gives us time to turn down the inner noise and increase awareness of what matters most. Silence cultivates mindfulness — recognition and appreciation of the present moment. Silence creates an environment conducive to focus and concentration, allowing me to perform tasks more effectively. One of the major reasons why silence has become an important part of everyday life is the ability to focus, as the modern world and its various noises enter my brain all at once. In a quiet and calm environment, I can complete daily tasks more efficiently and not be distracted by unwavering noises. In conclusion, silence provides a conducive environment to work, study and live in. Sometimes, silence is just the key essential to improving our mental state and emotions. Therefore, I agree with the statement, "Silence is golden".

Moreover, people may also say things to people from different cultures that are racist, In addition, they may also say inappropriate things to people from other religions.

I agree. The presence of silence gives us opportunities to voice out our own opinions and be heard. In a crowded room with a lot of noise, most of us will feel unnoticed and uncared for, and our opinions may not be heard or taken into account as there is too much going on. With silence, there is space for us to speak our thoughts and have others listen. Being able to advocate for ourselves and express ourselves is an important skill that helps us push to be better.
Silence also allows us to be observant of the things around us, when there is no sound, we will be able to focus more, and actually take notice of our surroundings or the things happening around us as we have to use our sense of sight to infer on the happenings around us rather than our sense of hearing. This helps us be sharp and attentive and provokes thinking.
Overall, silence is golden as it allows us have a voice that represents ourselves and helps us to take notice of the happenings around us.

Yes, I feel should have freedom of speech and be permitted to say whatever they want, whenever they want to. After all, who is there to stop you from doing so? One reason could be due to rules implemented. These rules are set up by our peers, not exactly stripping us of all our freedom, but more like limiting it. One example of such rules could be perhaps, not talking in class for example. However I feel that such rules are only needed to be implemented in the first place is because certain people abuse their freedom and power, saying the wrong things at the wrong time and being disrespectful. Of course, what they are doing is wrong and they should be taught to do so otherwise. But then again, not everyone is the same, and not everyone will abuse and use their freedom of speech wrongly and unethically like them. Thus I feel like everyone deserves freedom of speech, and to those who have once misused this right, they should reflect and correct themselves.

I take a neutral stance in this topic. Silence may be golden depending on the context and situation. Silence is a space to think and expand our thoughts, a break from the hustling and busy world of chatter. Silence is golden- a quiet respite. It may be a sign of respect and also a way to understand things better- for example, in the silence of the night, you look up at the sky, and seem to appreciate the beauty of the stars more.
The quiet is a vital part of our lives.
Silence may not be golden either. We need chatter to fill in this void of thought, and also a way to express some things best expressed through speech. We need a way to show people things that we want to convey and things we have experienced. Bundling these emotions and stuffing them in you won’t help the feeling of the want to say something. People say, sharing something makes you feel better. Yes, that is true, which is why we have speech.

In conclusion, I believe that silence is golden but complete silence is golden- either way, the quiet or chatter is important.

I don’t agree with this statement. Although freedom of speech is important, people should not say whatever they want, whenever they want. Everyone should take into consideration the situation they are in and the mental of state of whoever they are talking to before saying something. People should also think about whether what they want to say might offend religions or cultures. For example, if someone does not understand the difference between Chinese, Korean and Japanese, they should not openly group these cultures together and say that there is no difference. Instead, they should think about what they are going to say as this will result in people getting angered and disputes to take place, which is completely unnecessary. It is not ethical nor suitable for people to say whatever they want, whenever they want as it will also affect others around them. Although freedom is important, one should take into discretion how much freedom is too much.

Everyone would be self-absorbed and only care about their own thoughts.
Saying whatever you want at whatever time, is also rude and can hurt someone’s feelings.

I think that anybody can be a hero. A hero is someone who has the bravery to help another person who may be facing trouble, even when no one else around wants to. A hero is selfless and compassionate about benefitting others. Someone who tries to find ways to make the situation better, no matter how big or small their contribution may be, is considered a hero. If they have put in effort to lend a helping hand to someone else, they have shown that they are kind and caring, which makes them a hero, not to others but to the person whom received help from the kind person.

I disagree. It is crucial that one thinks before acting. The result of one’s actions could be deadly and unjust. Although this is the true meaning of freedom, what people are forced to do sometimes can be for one’s good. For example, if one is not taught what is right and wrong, that person could do anything they want and our society would be ruined if everyone had freedom and did bad things. I want our world to be a just and right place for everyone and it means that rules should be implied and freedom should not mean allowing everything to be done. In a slightly better context, if children were not forced to go to school, students may go to shopping malls and shop and play around, after a while, they would be bored too. In a real life example, there are times when people jaywalk and break the rules, sometimes ending up in accidents when cars drive past and hit them. In conclusion, there are many bad things that could happen if freedom was allowed.

Being a hero does not mean you need to have super powers like super strength or laser eyes. It also does not mean you have to be able to save the day every single time. being a hero means that you have shown great bravery and courage. Even if you have just gone out of your comfort zone to help someone in need, that is already considered a hero. A hero also does not save the day every time. They sometimes also make mistakes, but when they stood up to even help, it is already considered being a hero. For example, many people would consider doctors as heroes as they save peoples lives etc. However, doctors like surgeons are not always able to save everyone’s life. Many people die in surgery everyday, some are due to the malpractice of the doctor in charge of the surgery. However, people still consider these doctors as heroes as they look at the accomplishments and success of the doctors even if they fail one time, they might have been successful many more times. Therefore, I agree with this statement that ‘ anybody can be a hero ‘

Another example is not necessarily vulgarities but words that are intended to offend one should also be limited. Speaking politically, words that will affect the relationship of two countries should be limited.

No, I do not agree with this statement. Creative writers and artists should not be allowed to write and draw about anything, even if they are make-believe. There are a multitude of reasons for this. Firstly, I think that people might get offended and hurt. For example, when people publish fake stories or spread rumors that are not true, or even just writing hateful comments about someone might demoralise a person and hurt them emotionally. This might cause the victim to feel hurt and sad. Additionally, if a person spreads someone’s personal information or something the person does not want anyone to know, this act is not giving the person privacy. The person may be very embarrassed about it or feel very strongly towards the person who published it. This may cause unnecessary conflicts to happen. Lastly, the people’s words might tarnish the person’s image or reputation. If the person does not choose their words carefully, some of the viewers might read these and they will start to hate on the particular person.
I think that a creative writers and artists should only publish accurate information about a particular subject and choose their words carefully in order to avoid spreading hate, start conflicts and tarnish the person’s image.
Therefore, I disagree with this statement.

However, as much as the noise is nice, the silence allows us to focus on other things other than what we hear. If you do so, it’s to your detriment as your reputation worsens and authorities get involved (assuming it’s extreme enough)

Edit: I saw a lot of people assuming that writing or drawing was the same as sharing it for others to see. Why is that the case?
;-;

I disagree.

“Humans need stories to feel better about themselves.
No, Humans need stories to BE Human.”

I love this statement. In the dull lull of human life, we need creativity to make our lives livelier and add a spark or colour to our cycle. In human life, without colour, there is no motivation, no creativity, no meaning to life. Life is just waking up, doing what is neede, and falling asleep. Imagine you doing that continuously from the start to the end of your life. We need to add colour to life- what better way than stories to steal into and try to taste a different life, where life was different? It also opens our perspectives by reading from another’s point of view. Stepping into a fun-filled world, it gives us ideas and thoughts that increases our creativity and gives us motivation to do dull tasks we would otherwise not want to do. Authors often use elements of the story to address real issues in life- by using artfully twined words, a deeper feeling can be evoked in the reader and let the reader understand important life lessons that you have learned from your unique perspective.
In the dark sky, they are the Northen Lights- something new and interesting and different, a break from boring reality.

Stories are amazing; they are the watercolour that flows through a blank canvas. They are wonderful and meaningful, in so many different ways.
