Hello Mrs. Martin. We are doing everything we can in congress to make sure that everybody has equal opportunities. Congress is going to pass a bill easing people out of debt, and we also want to pass a bill that gives us half a billion dollars to the states to help the people that need it the most. Congress is also working on making more government jobs and lower taxes so people have more money. I'm sorry for the debt you are in, but the new laws should go in soon and everything should go back to normal .
- Tommy Kossey

Dear Mrs. Martin,
I hope this letter finds you well. I implore you not to despair too much, as we at the government in Washington, D.C. are fully aware of the dire situation our brave citizens are struggling through each day, and we have diligently worked to produce several potential solutions to manage and resolve this unfortunate crisis.

But I believe that you will be better reassured if I list some of the planned solutions to you, rather than simply putting forth vague promises, and so I will share two of the most significant ones with you. First, Congress is about to publish legislation that will increase wages as well as regulate competition and working hours for industry workers, so you and your husband will not have to worry about earning a living. Second, Congress is planning on granting the states 500 million dollars to help with the relief effort, which I am confident will assist in your desire to send your children to school in order for them to receive the education that forms the foundations of and helps to expand the United States.

With the solidarity of both the people and the government, this great country will continue to maintain its essential values as it moves forward through these uncertain, trying times.

-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (JT)

Dear Lorena Hickok,
I apologize for the conditions in which rural areas are under at this moment. However congress is planning to create the Farm Credit Association. This will lend a billion dollars to help reduce the poverty farmers face. In adittion, The Federal Emergency Relief Administartion and Resettlement Administration will sponsor experimental rural communities and greenbelt towns. The Farm Security Administration will enable tenant farmers to buy farms and build modern labor camps for migrants. Most importantly, The Rural Electrification Administratuin will bring electricity to your rural community. I am sorry for the conditions you are in, but congress is making every effort to improve living conditions in rural communities.

To address your concerns I will make you aware of what congress is currently doing in efforts to help you directly. Congress is in the works of passing legislation that will greatly ease mortgage distress as well as seeking to grant half a billion dollars for relief efforts. This aid will be immediate and direct as I understand the issues are pressing. Along with this, different areas of work are beginning to be created so I urge you to keep hope and look out for these changes. When disaster struck, you used your resources (volunteer organizations), which are just the things that I think will better our country in the future.

Dear Lorena Hickok,
I am so sorry to hear about the troubles farmers have been going through during this tough time for America. I understand that it may be a struggle to feed your cattle and earn a living on dry and windy lands, but there is not much for me or the government as a whole to do about your situation. At any point, we could send money to the farmers in need, but how would that affect you in the long run? Would you be able to keep your farms growing and running effectively for the time being? Yes, but eventually everyone would learn to grow too dependent on the government's help, therefore taking away the laissez-faire government that people had begged for a few years ago. If you can fix your own problems now, you will become a stronger farmer and learn how to maintain your farms even in the worst of times. Best of luck in your work.
-Herbert Hoover

However, I commend you for displaying a level of maturity and compassion atypical of your age group. In the capital, my husband is devising several plans to free America from this nightmare. As of today, he is to distribute half a billion dollars to the states, counties, and municipalities to care for those in dire need. With this money, you can open your institution for the elderly, who can live the rest of their lives to the utmost comfort. I hope your concerns have been answered and you can rest well tonight. I respect and honor you for attempting to help others, often times, people in times of struggle often act selfishly and greedily as there is simply less to go around; however, this is not the case with you and I applaud your selflessness. Unfortunately, to build a institution for the aged would be inconsistent with laissez faire government policy. I agree that the aged deserve some comforts at the end of their lives, but that should be achieved only through one’s diligence and perseverance in their younger years. I wish you the best of luck and hope you continue to help others.

 Sincerely,

Herbert Hoover

Dear Ms. Hickok,

I was deeply saddened by the situation you depicted vividly in your letter. Unfortunately, essentially our entire nation is dealing with the ramifications as a result of the trouble our economy has been facing. Work has been hard to find for many. However, the policies of my administration have worked to support Americans such as yourself. Through my policies granting aid to people in need, as well as the option of working for the government for many, I believe that we have made steps in the right direction. One thing I would like to say, however, is to have faith in the choices that the government makes. Sometimes it is necessary to change things to adapt to the current situation, and in this case that means changing our capitalism up a but.

Sincerely, President Roosevelt.

Dear [anonymous],

I greatly appreciate you writing to me and I am deeply apologetic for the conditions in which your family is enduring. I acknowledge and respect the work ethic of your family and commend you for that. Although I understand the dire circumstances in which you are living, I am hesitant to simply give money to your family. If I were to donate government money to you and your family, what guarantee is there that this would be the last action of benevolence from me to you. If occurrences such as these were to manifest, your family would lose their drive to work and become completely reliant upon me. In the long-term, I believe you and your family will be most benefited by working hard for money and trusting the system of capitalism. In paying for your own education, you will appreciate what you have earned more as opposed to accepting charity.

If I were to grant you a piece of advice, I would state that you and your family would be best to accumulate the money you need for graduation slowly but on your own. It would be less than desirable for you to be at the mercy of one granting you a loan then having the burden of paying interest in addition to the expenses you already face. I believe if you push for others in your family to work and slowly put aside money, this will manifest into the funds you need to graduate. Despite this, I sympathize greatly with the hardships you are enduring and wish I could do more to help. If time becomes scarce and you still lack the funds to graduate, I encourage you to write to me again and we may potentially derive a solution if you and your family have not yet accumulated the necessary funding.

With sorrow,

President Hoover

I agree with you that there should be aid provided for the elderly who are unable to care for themselves. I strongly believe that all Americans should have the right to be free from the economic fears of old age. With the addition of a system for these people who are seeking guidance due to their physical inabilities, there should be noticeable changes in the lifespan of American citizens. Which is something that I value deeply. You ask not to receive charity or relief, nor can I give any. The most I can give you is advice regarding the strength of our American people: that our potential lies in our individual abilities and, on behalf of the government, I cannot directly help you. I recommend that you search a wider range of job markets and perhaps develop more employable skills.
