I believe that when she went back to see her parents she had contracted an illness that lead to her death. Yoko, very much so, wanted to quit school at this point because of all of the bullies. She decided she would continue for her mother. She was so happy when the day came that mother would return. She was very sick during this time. While she was resting next to Yoko until Ko came back, she all of a sudden flopped her head over and remained very still. Doctors pronounced her dead right there. The changes we see in Yoko in this chapter is that she was wasting food. When Yoko find out that mother was dead, she throws a box filled with food on the floor. She would never have wasted anything for survival if her mother hadn't died. In this chapter, we see Yoko change when she does not react to the mean comments and the rude drawing from the girls at her school. She bares through school, even though she does not want to go but she does this for Mother anyway. When Mrs.Kawashima^Mother dies, Yoko was there, but Ko was away doing extra ours of schooling. The changes we see in Yoko is that when mother lays down, Yoko feels like she is an adult and she acts very mature in this situation. When they burn mother, Yoko is very emotional and starts crying. Mother immediately breaks down and dies. Ko and Yoko go to get her creamaded,  but it costs 20 yen and they thought that was too much money so they made them a deal that they would pay them after they do what they ask Also, they go to see Buddhist monks to pray for her and they don't  so they pray over mother for themselves saying to look over Ko and her. In this chapter, Yoko seems to step it up and start proving herself. After Yoko comes comes to the station, her mother dies right next to her, shortly after Ko returns to her dead mother. Luckily, a lady from the station, Ms. Masuda, takes care Ko and Yoko. They decided to cremate Ms. Kawashima and they value her ashes. Yoko no longer wants to go to school because all of the girls make fun of her.
