In '76 the average beak length and depth were 9.6mm and 10.7mm, which meant that the beaks were not very strong. Since the beaks were not strong, they were better at eating the small, soft portocala seeds. When the drought occurred in 1977, there was a huge decrease in the population of portacala seeds, so the birds needed to find another source of food. The only other seed available to the birds to eat was the tribulous seed. Since the tribulous seed is hard, a bigger and harder beak would be needed to survive. If the finch has a small beak, it would not be able to eat the tribulous seed. If the finch cannot eat the seed and cannot find another food source, it will starve. As a result, finches with the small beak will have a major decrease in the population due to the lack of food. Meanwhile, the finch with a larger beak will have a sudden increase of population because there is more food for them. The trait that allowed the finches to survive was having a very long, or deep beak. Since this type of finch thrived, they survived and were able to reproduce and make more of their kind, which is why the population increased. The definition of natural selection is the process where organisms with favorable traits are more likely to reproduce. This was shown many times throughout the data and was very easily proven in the data that was given.
