For the month of October in 2019 I co-curated an exhibtion with LUX in London and the LCVA entitled ‘All you need’s an excuse’. Whilst on residency at Hospitalfield, in autumn 2019 I began work on a new book as part of a Paul Mellon Fellowship with the working title ‘Video Activism Before the Internet’. In 2020, the book was taken up by the BFI/Bloomsbury as part of their Screen Stories series with the title ‘The Story of Video Activism’. Also in 2020/21, I am working with Grand Union, Birmingham, LUX Scotland, Nottingham Contemporary and Rule of Threes, Liverpool on a new project looking at the role of video in response to the housing crisis under the title ‘Forming a Resident’s Association’, which was referenced in Freize Magazine here and here. At the same time, in collaboration with Serptentine Gallery, I am developing a new project with Portman Early Chilhood Centre with the working title ‘Like Coming Home’.

In 2021, Bloomsbury republished the BFI Film Classics ‘Caravaggio’ by Leo Bersani and Ulysse Dutoit, for which they invited me to write a foreword, reflecting on the film in the context of Jarman’s Life and Work. The Paul Mellon Centre made a video about my research into AIDS activist video, which I aslo presented at the Photographer’s Gallery and at the BFI by the Independent Cinema Office. This same year I started working on the Bexley Three Rivers Project as a critical friend, which is an ongoing project that includes editing a community newspaper, The Bexley Responder, the first edition of which is due for publication in November 2022.

In 2022 I was invited to make a new work for the second edition of the Brent Biennial in collaboration with Mosaic LGBTQ+ Trust. Which has been installed in Wilesden Green Library as a public artwork for the three month duration of the Biennial and it was written about in the Guardian Newspaper.

I am currently developing a short animation project with, from and about people engaging with different forms of activism in response to current housing struggles. The script and characters in the animation are being written with groups and individuals living in various precarious housing situations and resisting the challenges faced in these conditions. The finished video will be made available to housing activist groups and other organisations as a fundraising and discussion tool, raising awareness and making a space to share stories of resilience and solidarity.

Since 2020 I have been a senior lecturer on the BA Film and Screen Studies course at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, where I lead units on Curating, Collaboration and Creative Technologies. I have built up a body of work making and editing short documentaries and personal film projects. I completed my practice-led PhD this year, and my main research areas are essayistic filmmaking, online media and filmmaking practices, practice-led research and film montage.

Hi everyone!
Thank you for the invitation to this event! I'm a new member of staff at UAL (started this last August), so it's great to be able to meet you.
My practice is in screendance (dance films) and my research lies at the intersections between film, choreography and performance. I'm the course leader for the new MA Performance: Screen at CSM. Before joining UAL, I worked at London Contemporary Dance School (The Place), where I created the MA Screendance.
In 2014 I directed Under the Cobblestones, a 20-minute film about freedom of speech and protest, in collaboration with choreographers Igor & Moreno and musician Bellatrix. The film was screened at the Cinedans Festival Amsterdam and awarded at Passion for Freedom Arts Festival London.

I have also created numerous dance shorts, such as Units of Action (which has been screened in many film festivals) and Tableleg (a film I directed and performed in, which has been shown at Sadlers Wells Theatre). I have been commissioned twice by T.H.E Company and the National Museum of Singapore.

Lately I've been investigating what an improvised filmmaking practice could look like. For this Jam Series, I took part in dance improvisation sessions, and shot and edited improvised films within a strict and limited timeframe of 2 hours. This resulted in 13 short films.
I really need to work on a new website (long overdue) but for now you can see some of my work on Vimeo. For example Under the Cobblestones' trailer (password "under")
Some of the Jam Series films:
Jam #11 and Jam #7
(password "marmelade")
See you soon!
Gabi

I'm an interdisciplinary artist working towards radical self-love, inspired by Black feminist practice and writing.

Through live performance, film, writing and multi-media installation, I explore places, objects and celebrities in British popular culture, and their effects on self-formation. I'm particularly interested in how Black identity is formed through performance - what performances are we allowed to do, expected to do, what performances do we lean into or away from, at which times. To investigate this I take an irreverent and interdisciplinary approach to performance mashing together art, music, sport and everyday performance traditions, blurring the line between script and improvisation and using humour and play to reach a variety of audiences and unlock multiple levels of meaning.

Collaboration is key to my work, often working together with children, activists and other artists to explore themes that impact our communities and share knowledge. Most recently I've collaborated with: community TV collective East London Cable, Chicken Nuggie Collective (a group of 7 thirteen Yr olds from Chase High School, Southend), and women, trans and non-binary grassroots footballers.

bio:

Rosa is a lecturer in Ba Performance: Design and Practice at Central Saint Martins.

I'm a scholarly researcher, teaching at LCC as a Lecturer in the Contextual and Theoretical Studies of Animation.

Despite my specialism in animation, my research interests extend to all screen media. I studied Film and Television Studies at BA and MA at the University of Warwick, and completed my PhD at Loughborough University in 2012. I expanded my thesis into a book, Animated Personalities: Cartoon Characters and Stardom in American Theatrical Shorts, published by University of Texas Press in 2019 (and available to read physically and digitally via the UAL library!). The book reads cartoon protagonists through the prism of star studies, and considers the history and aesthetics of the American film and television industry from the early 1900s to the present day. The work crosses many of the boundaries of film theory, offering innovative takes on concepts such as cinematic ontology, auteurism, stardom, and production theory.

My publications elsewhere - mostly available at https://researchers.arts.ac.uk/2140-david-mcgowan/publications - aim to be similarly mutlidisciplinary, covering the convergence of cinema and other forms of media, including videogames and social media. I am particularly interested in the intersection of film and home video, with my most recent article on the subject - 'Cinephilia, Take Three?: Availability, Reliability, and Disenchantment in the Streaming Era' - being published in Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies (as well as being presented at a recent Sonic Screen event).

In Dominica's practice as an independent visual artist, she exercises play as the main approach to creating work. Her work helps her to remain curious and open towards the world and its turbulences. Dominica is interested in storytelling as a mechanism of learning and social change. She draws back from the old forms of storytelling – the myths, the legends, the songs, and the cosmogonies.

Dominica has been working across the mediums of animation, printmaking, and performance since 2016. Her previous films have explored themes of connectivity and the subconscious, often through a poetic, abstract approach to storytelling; allowing the work to be accessible to a wider audience.

I have been teaching since 2019, working predominantly across different UAL institutions, as well as in Manchester Metropolitan University. This year I have been awarded an ECR status in UAL. I am currently a lecturer for MA Animation (Online).

My current research centres on more-than-human perspectives and animistic approaches to the environment, considering how animation can foster new ways of relating to the natural world. I am particularly interested in the intersections of ritual and animation, exploring how contemplative practices can inform processes of making and viewing. A key strand of this research investigates sustainable approaches to analogue animation and printmaking, examining how texture, materiality, and unpredictability can become active agents within the creative process.

Project Sample:

Re-Mind (in development): A short film exploring science, spirituality, and identity through the perspective of an omnipresent more-than-human observer. Produced by Animate Projects and supported by BFI Short Film Fund.

In the Garden (ongoing): Part of the Anima Mundi comic and animation anthology, this collaborative project brings together artists and academics to animate more-than-human perspectives through print, sound, and storytelling. Production supported with research funding from London College of Communication and Manchester Metropolitan University. https://www.nicaharrison.com/#/anima-mundi-in-the-garden/

Chado (past): A BAFTA-longlisted short film combining digital animation with Risograph printmaking, evoking memory, transformation, and childhood summers in the Russian wilderness. Produced by Animate Projects and co-produced by Blind Pig, with support from BFI Network. https://www.nicaharrison.com/#/chado/

Seek and Hide (past): A multimedia installation performance combining animation, contemporary dance and music exploring the theme of illusion, empathy through the use of improvisation.

Gracia Ramirez

I am a Senior Lecturer in Film and Screen Studies at LCC. I am interested on the intersections between aesthetics and history. I have published a book on the history of American experimental and independent cinema funding during the Cold War and several articles on art and media in urban spaces, propaganda, the representation of history in 1930s news documentaries, found footage and essay films.

I have carried out research at several archives and institutions in the U.S. and Europe and I am interested in the encounter between the archival record and oral history. I publish art criticism and have written texts for exhibition catalogues. I also have a creative practice using mixed media. Lately I have been mixing textiles and papers to create tapestries and artist books.

My most recent research delves into the production history of a European art film which adapted the postcolonial novel "Chronicle of a Death Foretold". The aim is to explore the connections between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean through locations, cinema and memory. I have also been writing about the in/visibilization of colonial violence in history textbooks and ways of imagining environmental beauty and violence in the Caribbean that transcends the tropicalising gaze.

Additionally, I am interested in the work of Jo Ann Kaplan, whose archive is a recent addition to the LCC Archives and Special Collections.

https://researchers.arts.ac.uk/2004-gracia-ramirez
