This image of an irrigated field shows how we as a society have come up with new technologies in order to grow crops in a more efficient manner, thus allowing for more greater food production. In turn, we change the environment in order to better suit the needs for plant growth. Humans have come up with many ways to control plants and this is just one option showing how we as a society have created a better way of harvesting crops by changing the environment to grow plants on.

I chose this animated video since it shows the process of photosynthesis in a really simple manner. The energy from the sun light, as well as C02 and H2O go through the chlorophyll to release oxygen and sugars for the plant to feed on. This clearly shows how a plant filters out C02, which is harmful to humans, to turn it into oxygen that humans and life in general needs to survive.

Rain forests are a great threat for deforestation. This is a huge threat to animal and human life since rain forests produce a large sum of the Earth's oxygen. Deforestation is linked with adding a 15% increase in the level of greenhouse gases produced. The tropical rain forests are a microcosm for a broad range of biodiversity, which is directly threatened by the cutting down of trees.
https://www.worldwildlife.org/threats/deforestation

This diagram clearly shows how the domestication of plants allowed for communities to settle into villages, ending the need for heavy migration. With the establishment of villages, more specialized roles were created and people no longer had to solely focus on finding food. A food surplus made it possible for this.
http://ccworldhistory.weebly.com/unit-1-neolithic-revolution--river-valley-civilizations.html

Large scale commercial farming was an innovation brought to Africa in the Green Revolution. Western farmers used Genetically Modified Plants, and an excess of land and water to further the growth output in these third world countries to help eliminate hunger. This leads to soil erosion and groundwater leeching, and has some other negative effects that make it controversial.

Sitting in a coffee shop, caffeine hit me as being the most influential plant based chemical. Caffeine comes from the cocoa plant, most famously, but can be found in the kola nut as well. It is legally for sale in the forms of coffee, tea, and energy drinks and holds its power over millions of Americans. What makes it so successful, is its marketing towards being a source of instant energy in the high stress world of America. It is also relatively safe and has mild effects.
