When the settlers came to Jamestown, they decided to focus on finding gold instead of growing food or building housing. This caused the decline of the colony. They only survived because of natives in the area. The colonists in the Virginia company did not consider the Africans slaves, instead servants but because so many people wanted Africans, they became scarce and expensive.

George Calvert was the Lord of Baltimore who was recently a converted Catholic. He wanted to begin a Catholic colony. Luckily because these colonists focused on building temporary shelters and getting food, they survived. The colony started to change when more Protestants started to migrate. Calvert appointed a Protestant governor in 1648.

Explain how the ideas, beliefs, and cultures of colonists influenced the development of regional differences.

As we have seen throughout many of the colonies that have been settled in early America, religion is an important factor to making a colony. In Massachusetts, the Puritans and Separatists both migrated over to start a new religious life. The conflicts between the two of them may have stunted that growth, but it helped America not just expand in Massachusetts, but all over the land. The Quakers were the other interesting group because of the hate they got. If it weren't for the hate, there never would be a Pennsylvania. There is also Jamestown, where the colonists ideas were wrong. Instead of using there time wisely to build and make necessities, they tried to find gold. There were many more settlements like those in the Carolina's or Georgia that were not as religiously motivated but instead had the idea of starting the New World. In the end, the ideas, beliefs, and cultures of colonists really shaped how their colonies ended up.

The Quaker people were the "society of friends". They were very unpopular among the British people. They went to New England, Rhode Island and northern Carolina but were rejected everywhere they went. Thankfully William Penn found Pennsylvania, a home for the Quakers.

In the Caribbean Islands and the Southwestern area of America, the Spanish people had a strong influence on the region. The Spanish influence in the southwest really grew the natives battle techniques and they built presidios. Even though the Spanish first landed in the Caribbean, the English had a more predominant influence on the region because they introduced slaves. Slaves became very big in that region to harvest sugar.
