The symbol of books is used through out this book because it is one of the main ideas. The books in this story are difficult to obtain, so it also represents how difficult learning can be to obtain. This connects to the theme of being able to think freely because when you think freely it is easier to learn and gain knowledge. This connects to the book because, everything that creates conflict for the idea of an easy life,  it should be destroyed. Such as books. They create conflict, and the people who give into the books will be destroyed by the Mechanical Hound. The Mechanical Hound is a negative for the people being hunted by it, and a positive for the sake of society.
