Therefore, if a small village were to be taken over by rebels that have access to weaponry and other resources while the inhabitants are mostly defenseless, it makes for a very dangerous situation for anyone to be in. Fighting the rebels or defying them will result to more conflict. Also, the rebels are likely already very irritated and easily angered as seen in the first few chapters, so its probably not a good idea to live there unless you want to be killed/ordered around/forced to do things/be a slave/join the war.

He can't go back into Ethiopia because the guys with guns will shoot him. Not back to Sudan because there is a civil war there. If it was me, I would have gone to Uganda because there was no war there and it was not in Ethiopia.
