Before this discussion, I used to think that Singapore has achieved a multi-racial society where all people are accepting towards other races and there is minimal racism in Singapore.
But now i think that there are still many Singaporeans out there from different races who have recieved many racial comments and have been offended by others due to the colour of their skin. Not everyone is accepting of people from other races and not everyone is treated equally due to their races.

I believed that people these days won't judge somebody through their races.

But now I think that the efforts done by the government could still be improve as racism is still happening, some people do make racist remarks and streotypes on other races. These racist remarks can anger many people and even hurt their feelings. Therefore, I strongly believe that government can continue to put in more efforts to integrate racial harmony in Singapore.

Although I believe the government is trying its best to take action against racism, their efforts are not focused on changing the mindsets of people by eradicating racial stereotypes and slurs, which is why racism is still thriving. Thus, the methods used by the government to combat racial discrimination are not effective.

Before today's discussion, I used to think racial discrimination was not as serious in Singapore, since racial harmony is being promoted from young. I thought the government efforts were more than enough and most singaporeans respected each other regardless of race.

But now I think I was blinded by the shallow efforts to educate singaporeans, as there is still a lot of room for improvement and many people are still racist. Eventhough the racism is not extreme, it occurs often enough to affect the minority, robbing them of some privileges the majority have taken for granted.

This is because there were lots of activities held in school for racial harmony and students are aware of racial harmony so they can understand other races and be more considerate.
However, after the discussion I realized there were still a small amount of people making racists jokes and doing things that disrespect other races. Even though the government may be taking actions to increase racial harmony, but it’s still up to the people in Singapore to take the initiative to be respectful towards each other regardless of race and make Singapore a racial harmony country.

Hugo
Before the discussion i used to think that government put in much effort to make singapore achieve racial harmony and singapore has achieved racial harmony

However, after reading the articles, i realised that there are many people who are still being racist to one another directly or indirectly. Some are still making stereotypes about other people and judge them based on skin tone and their outer appearance

Tawfeeq
Before today's lesson i used to think that the government was putting in enough effort for singapore to be a multiracial country. Since it claims to be a multi racial society where people of different races are treated equally. I also used to think that race was not an issue to apply for jobs as only the skill and qualifications matter

But now i think that the government could put in even more effort by reinforcing the importance of racial harmony and all races should be treated equally. This is because a chinese muslim was ill-treated by a job interviewer. The reason why she was ill-treated was because of the dietary constraints she has as a muslim. They thought she was malay because she was wearing a tudung and didnt want her to join the job. This shows how bosses nowadays dont take in people with skills and qualifications but instead they look for their race and religion. Thus the emphasis in a multi racial society needs to be reinforced further

Before today’s discussion, I used to think that Singapore’s level of racial harmony is extremely high and is one that is worth to be impressed about. I used to strongly believe that Singapore has truly set the standard of what it is like to be a harmonious country with a society that is united as one and not broken through differences.

However, i now think that there is still so much room for improvement as we cannot say that 100% of people in Singapore are as accepting of other races as compared to others. I feel that there are still certain cases of racial disharmony and this shows how Singapore needs to keep on progressing towards the greater good of society by maintaining and increasing its level of racial harmony

Before the discussion, I thought that all the efforts that our government has made so far was enough in ensuring racial and religious harmony in Singapore, and that we were relatively peaceful, even thought we had some mishaps here and there, since I know about the situation of racial discrimination in other parts of the world.
After the discussion, I know that racial discrimination is still a very big problem in Singapore even though our government is putting a lot of effort into making Singapore racially harmonious and that the efforts made by our government could still be tweaked a bit in order to allow people of different races to get along better
