A teacher with the name of Dorothea Dix had agreed to teaching a Sunday class located in jail. Once she saw the conditions of the prison, Dorothea was overwhelmed. People were bound in chains, they were also crowded in dark cells, there was a short supply of food and the children were placed in jail with adults. Even some that people considered insane were brought to the prison and tortured as a punishment for their behavior. 

Dorothea Dix, being disturbed by the sight, sent a report to the state legislature about the conditions in prisons. Hospitals specific for the mentally ill were created. Along with this, cruel punishments were outlawed and prisons for debtors were discontinued.
Lastly, a special justice system for children was created so that the charges wouldn't be as harsh.

It was a public campaign against the selling or drinking of alcohol. The abuse of alcohol had been known to break up families, and either cause or worsen mental illnesses. Many of the reformers thought of the banning of alcohol as not a punishment, but a precaution for the safety of everyone.

The selling of alcohol was later banned by Maine in 1850. Other states followed soon after. However, the temperance movement had already passed by 1868 with Maine being the only state remaining with alcohol prohibition. 
Years later, the eighteenth amendment was ratified by the states that prohibited the manufacturing, selling and transportation of alcohol. However, the results of this act did not improve much. Some turned to the illegal selling of alcohol, and others used violence to gain it.
