Ali is a nice guy, everybody likes him. His family arrived in Germany many years ago and has managed to build a good life in the new country. Both parents have solid jobs and Ali’s brothers and sisters are doing fine. Some of the people in the community even describe Ali as a role-model for other young people, even at the age of 16. He is open, never enters into conflicts with other young people or with teachers, and he is deeply engaged in all sorts of after-school activities, including in the local football club. Ali and his family are not strongly connected to the Muslim community in the city; they have activities in different communities and they are well-respected In all the communities. Of course they take part in the most important Muslim celebrations during the year. ? In March this year a bomb exploded in a bus in the nearby city. Several people were killed and many injured. After some investigations the police arrested a group of young Muslims and charged the group with the crime. 16 year old Ali was one of the young Muslims in the group.

| What happened? How do you think the people who know Ali is reacting to this (family, school, and friends)? Try to put yourself in Ali’s place: what made you become part of this group? Why did you have the need? Nobody seemed to be able to foresee that this would happen: could anything have happened in the school to prevent Ali’s involvement?
